DESIGNING A FUNCTIONAL WEBSITE  by

 Jonathan Popoola
4/2/2008 at 09:04
Functionality is an important factor in great websites. A website is said to be functional when the surfer is able find his or her way around in the pages without getting lost. It is also very important that the most important links and icons are easily available within the page. In this article I want to point out three things to consider when designing a functional website.

Feature Rich:

A functional website offers the most important "tools" customers always use. The designer should always keep in mind that customers want to look around using an internal search engine. When an article attracts their interest, they may want to place a comment, or send it to a friend, or tag them in a social bookmarking site of their choice.

When providing features, the designer should place them in the most accessible location possible. Most news sites like Time.Com provide the tools at the beginning of their articles on the right side. This makes sense because readers prefer to read the first few sentences then decide whether they want to read on or save the article for the next.

Feature rich sites also provide information in small portions, like quotations, trivia, or the weather. This block or blocks of information should be related to the overall purpose of the site. They are placed in areas where they are most accessible and contribute to the aesthetic appeal of the page.

Navigable:

A functional website should also be navigable. It means that customers can easily access its content using just ...

DESIGNING AND DEVELOPING A GOOD WEBSITE  by

4/2/2008 at 09:03
How do you design and develop a good website? What does it take to drive traffic and make it to the top of search engines? How can you make it user-friendly and aesthetically appealing to your targeted market? Can a website really deliver more income for your company or offered services?

These and more are the many considerations that need attention in designing your website. Whether you are designing for personal use or for your company’s products/or services, you must have clear ideas of what you want to accomplish in your website. A good website starts with a good concept and web structure.

First of all the trend for website design nowadays are inter-active. Gone are the days of HTML base website that are static. It does not accomplish much, but just make a presentation of who, where and what you are. Users can only read your pages but can’t accomplish much.

The latest technologies for website design have paved the way for more than just static information. Most of website in the Internet now offers both information and inter-active pages that better communicates to the general public. You will accomplish more by designing pages that will allow visitors to interact and actually make a connection with your website.

How can you accomplish this? Simple, make use of the latest trends in the Internet technology. They are ever increasing and offer variety for you, and the choices are endless. Depending on what you’d like to accomplish through your website, incorporate technology that will be ...

EFFECTIVE WEB DESIGN, NAVIGATION  by

 Travis Simpson
4/2/2008 at 09:03
I want to talk a little bit about Navigation and how web designers are able to tackle this obstacle without overpowering the content. Too many times we find websites where the navigation system is either uninspiring or far to complicated for day to day use.

Navigation is the key ingredient in allowing people to get the content they want at a rate that they are accustomed to.

The Navigation area is often the first to be tinkered with when developing an artistic or unique design for a site. However, it is also the most fragile of categories...stray too far from the simple and straightforward and you will have a website that no one will want to navigate or even visit again.

Flash banners/headers are a great way to make the simple seem different. Flash is a great solution in livening up a website in order to create a more interesting experience. When doing a flash navigation, create something that speaks to your client or company with brand identity, but try not to overdo the animation to the point that it overpowers the rest of the website. This should be seamless and add a touch of brilliance to the website.

Here are a few examples of interesting flash navigations. However, all of these sites are full flash, which is a by web designer "No-No."

Dreamworks and Popsound both have a sleek design, but each has an entirely different feel and purpose. I personally find the Dreamworks rollover to be a bit too long and slightly distracting, ...

EFFECTIVE WEB DESIGN, WHY A UNIQUE LAYOUT?  by

 Travis Simposn
4/2/2008 at 09:02
Unique web designers and web designs may not be as common as your typical layout, but there are a good number of them present on the web today. However, the issue with many of these websites is the inability to mix functionality with an attention-grabbing design.

Attention-grabbing design is basically when the web designers reach equilibrium between functionality and powerful design/art ideas. It allows the user to have an experience or remembrance when entering your site for the first time, but also allows for the least amount of frustration for the most amount of content.

The main goal of any business is profitability, and in order to achieve the end goal one must have a steady flow of traffic and repeated visits. There are a number of ways to tackle this issue, be they usability, navigation, or speed. Today we are going to focus on usability and how to mix it with an attention-grabbing design.

Usability:

Usability for web designers is one the many facets of web design that I usually develop and plan first and foremost. Before even stepping foot into unique design or art direction, one must think of ways to direct the user’s attention to the content of the website and build the artistic content around it.

More often than not, when web designers try to rely solely on an artistic design, they end up losing their viewers since they are far too distracted by the art direction.

So instead, one should focus on design that will accommodate the content instead of clash ...

TIPS ON WEBSITE DESIGNING THAT HELPS IN BETTER RANKING  by

 Meenakshi Wali
4/2/2008 at 09:01
Website designing plays a critical role in search engine optimization. And it is due to this reason that many organizations prefer to get their websites designed by a website design company where professionals would know how to make website designing search engine friendly. In this article, we will discuss how important is a layout and how a proper layout can help in search engine optimization.

The importance of a layout can not be overstressed. Every website has a layout - good or bad - without which, it isn’t possible to have a website designed. The layout is like a framework to the website designing which dedicates space to various elements in the site. And when a layout performs that important a role, we simply can not deny the significance of having a pre meditated, well calculated layout defined by an expert.

The layout also helps in search engine optimization. How? If your website has a layout which is professional, distinct, specific, and clear, it helps the crawler or the search engine robots to crawl and index the web pages in a better way. When the pages get indexed properly, it also helps the search engine know if you have provided useful information on the given topic. This can in turn help in ranking better in the search engines. Picture this: your website gives more information and updated knowledge to the visitors than your competitors, but you rank below their sites. Why - because the layout in your web page was such that ...

THE INTRICATE WEBSITE DESIGNING  by

Web site is the most useful resource on the World Wide Web. With images, texts, animations, audio-video and other elements, the messages conveyed over web pages are more meaningful than on any other shared platforms. Apart from the structural aspects, the functionalities provided by web sites are numerous, ranging from simple static information on web pages to a holistic involvement in any particular web activity.

Website designing is an important aspect of web sites. With millions of web sites being created, there have been a lot many innovations witnessed in the design and development of web sites.

Website designing has been accompanied by one more related aspect called development. Together the two have seen numerous alteration and modifications to meet the requirements of the publishers.

There are many parameters that help us to analyze and compare various website designing templates. A web site typically consists of many web pages that are linked with each other.

The most important feature of every web site is its size or the number of pages. There is a wide range as you can find web sites having few pages and also massive portals having hundreds and thousands of pages.

The lay out of web site encompasses different elements and features. Web sites are designed and customized to the display settings of screen. Every web site has a background, which can be a solid color, gradient or picture. Then there are tables, navigation panels, the header, the footer, top navigation, bottom navigation, left navigation, right navigation, etc. If you would ...

WEB BROWSER CONFLICTS EXPLAINED  by

 Donald A. Miller, PhD
2/9/2008 at 11:24
A quick look at Wikipedia reveals that Mosaic was the first popular World Wide Web browser to mix image elements with text. It was developed at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications in 1992, released to the public in 1993 for non commercial use, and orphaned in 1997.

Mosaic project alumni and other users established Mosaic Communications Corporation which eventually became Netscape Communications Corporation, producing Netscape Navigator. A different group established Spyglass Inc. with their own version of Mosaic. When Microsoft was not allowed to license the Netscape Navigator, they made a deal with Spyglass for fees partly based on browser sales. Microsoft called their browser Internet Explorer and introduced it as an add on to Windows 95. MS bundled IE with later versions of Windows, thus having no sales revenues on the browser, which caused Spyglass to threaten legal action, resulting in $8 million settlement to Spyglass.

Netscape had initial market dominance, based on user acceptance. IE gained dominance via distribution with Windows. Such competition fostered both proprietary code and the evolution toward similar user interfaces. As of this writing, Netscape has been discontinued, and the non-profit Mozilla Foundation has continued Netscape concepts into the open source FireFox browser and related applications.

The Safari browser was developed by Apple Inc. for distribution with Mac OS X. It was first released as a public beta in January 2003 and is now available for Windows. It is claimed to be significantly faster than the alternatives.

The Opera browser ranks behind Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, ...

WHY DYNAMIC WEB SITE DOES NOT CRAWLED BY META SEARCH ENGINES  by

 Deepak Panchal
2/9/2008 at 11:23
Dynamic generated web sites often cause problems with search engines. Dynamic website design, generally not crawled by search engines. What should a web designer do to make his website search engine friendly? What should a web designer or search engine optimizer do to optimize his website? Does his web site never get indexed and never get ranked? If your web pages are dynamically created from the database, it’s likely that many search engines have difficulty to crawl and index them.

Advantage of dynamic web site

Dynamic website design is mainly developed for security purpose. Because all things are dynamic & work according to customer need, it is difficult for hacker to access the site. Using AJAX technology, there is no need to refresh whole page. We can change only that part which has to change & send that part to server to update. It reduces the overload of server. If your website is developed dynamically it is easy to handle, if any one want to change product or product detail, can easily changed. Website designer can manage database easily.

Disadvantage of dynamically created pages

Many search engines like Google for example don’t like dynamically created pages because the crawlers might get in an infinite loop on your server if they follow dynamically created Website design pages with a query string in it. The spider can be trapped in the web server - and therefore the spiders and bots are very careful not to enter the web site too deep. Dynamic generated URL’s with a ...

WHY LIVE CHAT SHOULD BE ON EVERY WEBSITE  by

 Aaron Mills
2/9/2008 at 11:22
In the last decade the internet has been used for many purposes. The underlying design of the internet has made it a great tool for sharing information and communicating ideas. Before the internet was used for selling goods or advertising anything it was used for communication. todays forums come from yesterdays bulletin board systems.

It was not long before these bulletin board systems for local people to communicate with each other became todays internet chat rooms. Instant communication at long distance via text chatting became the norm when companies like AOL serviced the lion share on internet users. This type of instant text communication evolved into instant messengers like AOL Instant Messenger and Yahoo Communicator. At the same time this revolution in instant long distance communication took place website owners the world over added chat rooms to their websites.

The general idea is that people would want to come back to their website frequently to chat if they had a chat room. In todays world chat rooms are almost a thing of the past. Chat rooms have become live voice-chat enabled environments like SecondLife This however does not mean chat applications do not have a place on your website. In fact quite the contrary, chat applications have gotten better over time. As the web has evolved website owners are finally figuring out the correct place for live chat to exist on a web page.

Chat should exist right on the front page of your site, or at least on the frequently asked questions ...

11 TIPS TO FIX YOUR WEBSITE’S INTERNAL SEARCH  by

 Justin Palmer
2/9/2008 at 11:22
Google has raised the bar. If you misspell a word, it tells you. If you perform a search returning millions of results, they prioritize the results by showing you the most relevant page (usually). Compare that to most internal site search features on eCommerce sites. Not only can they not handle misspellings, they usually to a poor job of ranking results. Combine a poor site search feature with a confusing navigation, and you’ve got a usability nightmare. Why optimize your internal site search? For one, some research suggests internal site search users convert 3 times better than users who don’t use search, assuming their query returns relevant results.

Below I’ve gathered up 11 ideas for improving your internal site search feature.

1. Know What Visitors are Searching For: Optimizing internal site search begins with understanding what visitors are searching for, how often, and why. Do users resort to site search because of poor site navigation? Are certain queries performed over and over? Your website analytics must answer these questions (Google analytics recently launched a site search feature). In addition, track what percentage of search queries return no results. As you improve this feature, you’ll have a metric to benchmark your progress.

2. Intelligent Search Suggestions: An intelligent site search feature, that suggests common searches as you type, is an excellent usability feature that can prevent website visitors from making queries that return no results or irrelevant items. Checkout Foodnetwork for a great working example of an AJAX ...

WHAT TO REMEMBER FOR SUCCESSFUL PRINT DESIGNS  by

 Lynne A Saarte
1/25/2008 at 20:07
Not all graphic designs are created equal. And definitely not all graphic designers have skills that come naturally. Thus, your print design in your marketing collaterals varies with the skill that your graphic designer has.

Moreover, the attractiveness of every print design also depends on the eyes and view of your target audience. Some may be appreciative of your images and layout; while others may find your marketing collaterals a bit bland for their tastes.

In order for your marketing collateral to compete with the rest of the successful print ads, here are some print design tips that you can use to draw a positive response:

1 - Don’t crowd your limited space with too many elements. This is particularly true for marketing collaterals that only have a small space to work with (e.g. postcards, business cards, flyers, etc.). Leave ample space for your target audience to rest their eyes (this is what you call white space). More elements will only distract rather than enhance your message, which is the most important aspect of your marketing collateral.

2 - Consider using large images and pictures instead of small ones. They attract higher readership and appreciation.

3 - More visuals tend to attract more than words. Hence, use your illustrations and print design to enhance and emphasize your message. If you can, produce an image that is almost half the size of your entire page to prove your point.

4 - Consider designing a layout that your target audience would actually read through. Don’t let a space ...
