How To Choose Tennis Equipment

by  Sagbee C 3/16/2011

The right tennis equipment, gear and apparel can definitely affect the way athletes play. Using the right equipment can spell the difference between winning and losing. In tennis, there are several tennis equipments and all should be chosen carefully.

In tennis, the equipments that are frequently used include racquets, balls, court and practice equipment, clothing and shoes. All this equipment can help players improve their game. Sponsors of top tennis players study each tennis player before giving them their gears to make sure that the equipment they provided matches the player’s playing style.

For amateur players who want to improve their game, there are some tips they should consider when buying their tennis gear.

The tennis racquet is one of the basics of tennis equipment. Without it, you cannot play tennis. There are several tennis makers such as Wilson, Babolat, Dunlop, Gamma and many more. Choosing the right tennis racquet does not depend on the price of the racquet.

Just because it is expensive does not mean that it is the right one for you. Usually, the playing style of each player determines the right kind of racquet for them. The size, head weight, frame material and strings of the racquet can affect your shot. For instance, a stiffer racquet with a heavier head is less likely to send the ball into unexpected angles.

This means that players who use this kind of racquet can control the angle of the ball easily. On the other hand a racquet with a stiffer frame is more powerful. ...

Seven Tips to Hitting a Precise Forehand Volley

by  David Drucker 3/16/2011

Hitting a volley in tennis may seem quite easy when you see the professionals do it. Those players have hit millions of balls, putting in numerous amounts of hours of their time. The volley is one of many shots in the game of tennis that’s classified as a player’s weakness. The number one reason for this weakness is that they are scared of the ball. The reason they fear the ball is a result of not knowing the proper steps on how to properly hit a volley. Just like any other shot in tennis, the volley takes a great deal of time to learn. As a coach, I teach the same seven step method to my players no matter what age they are or how much experience they have. The following are seven tips on how to hit a precise forehand volley.

1. Footwork: When it comes to hitting a volley, your footwork is a vital component to execution. First of all, you must have your legs at about shoulders width apart. Next, you must remember to be on your toes, which in tennis terms is referred to as the "balls of your feet." Don’t forget to bend your knees as well. The reason for this as opposed to standing flat-footed and up straight is your awareness and reflexes are much more sharp. Volleying is a very quick process, so the more alert you are the better chance you have to hit a well-struck volley.

2. Racquet Positioning: As it comes time ...

Wimbledon Championship

by  Engr Nizam Uddin 3/16/2011

There are many sports in this world but few among them become a tradition like tennis. This sport has been around since the 19th century when it was first played. There are many tournaments held by many governing bodies in the world of tennis but the most traditional and prestigious is the Wimbledon championship. People refer saying only Wimbledon because of its popularity among the Grand slams held every year.

The first Wimbledon championship was held in the All England Club in London in 1877 and is still held at that same place now. Wimbledon has its own surface, which is grass, and so people generally refer to tennis as "lawn tennis". The tournament usually takes place from June to July over a course of 2 weeks.

The Grand Slams which I have been talking about are a collection of major events happening in a year that consist of the Australian Open, The French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open. The Australian Open takes place first then the French Open then Wimbledon and finally the US Open. The Grand Slams decide a player’s world rankings.

The Australian Open is played in a hard court while the French is on a clay court and the Wimbledon is played on a traditional grass court and finally the US Open is played on a hard court again.

There are many traditions of the Wimbledon some of them are eating strawberries and cream, there is a dress code for players. The All England Club was ...

How To Pick Up A Tennis Ball

by  Steven Chang 3/16/2011

After playing tennis for a while, players start to develop a pretty cool skill of how to pick up a tennis ball. It does take some practice, but I’ve learned that having high school tennis practice at school allows you to get this practice. After a group drill, there are tons and tons of balls to be picked up. You can either pick them up one by one and look like a fool sticking your bottom out every single time you bend over to pick up a ball or two. Or you can look cool and hip with these different ways of picking up a tennis ball.

Since I have been playing tennis for so many years, I have developed and almost mastered several cool ways of picking up a tennis ball. Here is a video demonstration showing how to pick up a tennis ball. Of course it’s easier to demonstrate this, but some explanation with video demonstration would be even better.

First, there is the most simple but still pretty awesome foot and racket trick. This, and anything tennis related, involves some sort of hand eye coordination. Place the ball between foot, and racket. The key thing here is to secure the ball with the frame of your racket. Make sure the ball is not touching the ground and it is cradled by the racket’s frame, strings, and foot. Next, lift your foot up and move your arm along with it to give the ball a toss. It’s kind of like ...

by  Michael Bridges 9/29/2010

Everybody knows that tennis is a great physical game, but just as important as the physical game is the tennis mental game. For the most part people put forth a lot of effort on the physical aspect of the game and it is a very important part of the game. Knowing the different ways to hit the ball, knowing the correct body positions in order to hit the ball correctly, being in go physical shape in order to do all the running that’s required and knowing how to hit the ball to place it where you want it go are all necessary to know in order to play the game, but it is also necessary to play a mental game in order to win.

You can win most of your tennis games by playing smarter rather than harder. For instance you don’t have to use a lot of force on the ball if you use the right form and swing, that’s a part of working smarter not harder. Now, this is not to say that you should over think your game. Over thinking can be just as bad on your game as not using mental strategies in your game. Exercise is not only good for your physical game, but is also good for the mental game. It will help you to maintain that mental awareness you need to play the game.

Playing a tennis mental game can help you beat opponents that have better precision and techniques than you. Your mental focus ...

Footwork in Tennis Is One of the Most Important Elements of Your Game

by  Jeff Lowe 9/29/2010

At every level of tennis, footwork may be the most important element to your success. If you can not move efficiently to the ball you can not be aggressive and take advantage of your opponent’s weaker shots.

It is a simple fact. If you can get to the ball early you can hit the ball with authority. If you are late to the ball you will be on the defensive.

The question then becomes how do I improve my footwork and what constitutes great movement on the court?

The first step to good footwork is to keep your feet moving. You will never see a professional with their feet completely still and anchored to the ground and stationary.

Every pro is constantly moving their feet and is ready to move 360 degrees in any direction.

A big key to movement is to react as soon as possible when your opponent hits the ball. In reality the best players in the world react before their opponent hits the ball.

The professionals take a split step just before their opponent hits the ball so that they are ready to run in any direction. They also look to see how aggressively their opponent is going to hit the ball. If they are stepping into the ball with a lot of time they can expect a tough shot. If they are off balance or late to the ball they can anticipate a weaker shot.

If you are attacking the net and you know that your opponent is going to be very ...

The Secrets to Winning Recreational Tennis Matches

by  Pat McDaniel 9/10/2010

I have been playing recreational tennis matches for close to 10 years now. For the first few years, I would lose a lot, often to players who I thought had weaker tennis skills than me. It was quite frustrating.

It took me about 4 years of playing matches to figure out how I could win more tennis matches. There are three things I do now that result in me winning a lot more than I used to.

ONE: Engaging in a Little Intelligence

Almost any recreational player will hit the ball the same way almost every time. Study you’re your opponent a little more closely at the beginning of a match. Hit a cross court shot to his or her backhand and see where and how the ball comes back to you. Then do the same thing with the forehand.

Most likely, you will see a pattern. Once you know the pattern, you can anticipate it and come up with a counter shot for winning the point.

TWO: Tie Your Shoe

Most recreational players will speed up their pace of play when things are going badly for them. If they serve a fault, they will waste no time to serve another ball without much thought. And they will rush through points and shots which in most cases result in many lost points.

This negative state is common in tennis and you have to break the pattern first with your mind before your tennis skills can help you get out of a hole. The best way to do ...
