Swim Spas - The Wave of the Future?

by  Chris Hartpence 4/7/2012

Swim spas have been around in one form or another for years, but because hot tub pricing was general so much more attractive than the swim variant, they were seen almost exclusively as playthings for the rich.

Make no mistake, they still tend to be very pricey...even at a discount, swim spa prices are such that a top of the line one will still set you back between thirty and forty thousand dollars, to say nothing of the ongoing fees you’ll shoulder to maintain it once it’s installed and running on your property.

Still, price isn’t (necessarily) the only consideration. There are enormous health benefits to be reaped by swimming, its hard to put a price tag on good health, high swim spa cost or no.

In fact, a recent study done by one Dr. Stephen Blair, of the University of South Carolina, found after surveying more than 40,000 men, age 20-90 years, that their risk of dying had dropped to less than half for those who incorporated swimming as their major form of exercise.

You read that correctly. The study definitively proved that swimming beat walking, jogging, and every other form of regular exercise in terms of promoting better health and longer life, so pricey or no, if it’s something you can afford, then it’s very definitely a good option if you’re serious about getting and staying healthy!

Bear in mind too, that you don’t necessarily need to get the top of the line model with all the bells ...

How Much Do Endless Pools Cost?

by  Chris Hartpence 4/7/2012

Pools are a big deal, and usually, a big, expensive deal. That’s why anytime someone starts thinking about getting one, the question will come up. For me, I did tons of research, but liked what I saw most of all when I started pouring through Endless pool reviews. The good and the bad (and yes, there were both), painted a pretty accurate picture, and I counted myself ready to take the next step.

As soon as I got to that point though, there was the question: How much do Endless pools cost, anyway? I braced for the sticker shock, but was pleasantly surprised in this regard.

To my shock, you can actually get an Endless swim spa for as little as seven thousand dollars (the cheapest price I found on line when doing my research was $6995). Of course, that doesn’t count installation fees and ongoing maintenance, but I was expecting a price more than triple that, so I was pretty excited.

Now granted, that seven thousand bucks buys you a lot less pool than you can ultimately get. If you start adding all the bells and whistles they make available on various models (you can get pools of varying depths, with deeper being obviously more expensive, customized liners and covers, underwater lights, treadmills, and hydrotheraphy jets, etc, and when you start adding all that stuff on), the price can mount very quickly, escalating into the tens of thousands of dollars, but if all you want is a therapeutic pool ...

The Benefits of Swimming

by  Sean McAdams 4/7/2012

Quickly, what’s the first thing you think of whenever an individual says the phrase "swimming"? It’s almost summertime plus it’s an Olympic year, therefore i would venture to state Michael Phelps. Phelps, keep in mind, won a record eight gold medals at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. Obviously, not everyone is Michael Phelps, and yet we can all become swimmers. Even if you don’t know how to swim, now could be a wonderful time frame, considering it’s beginning to get warm outside as it’s nearly summer time.

So why pick swimming as an activity? For starters, it’s an "exercise" simply in mindset, unless you are participating in competitive swimming. Not just this, however, if you are only swimming to have fun, you can go swimming at any sort of speed you’d like. That is probably the reason why swimming is actually known as a lifetime activity. You can also go swimming at a beach or a swimming pool and throw a party or maybe spend a nice day with the family! Last but not least, if those factors aren’t more than enough, it’s moreover an excellent cardio substitute for running or riding a bike, since you don’t put as much pressure on your ankles and legs. With that being said, you shouldn’t permanently replace those methods of cardio.

Swimming will work nearly every muscle in the body and may also help to improve stamina along with cardiovascular conditioning. Did you know that swimming can also increase muscle strength? ...

Installing Your Own Swimming Pool

by  Nathaniel Bailey 3/16/2011

So you have decided to install your own swimming pool. If you are a competent DIY person then you will have either opted for an above ground swimming pool or an "In ground" block and liner pool.

If you have gone for an above ground swimming pool then your installation should be fairly simple. Most above ground kits just require a suitable flat and level surface to put the pool on, and surprisingly you will only need a few common household tools to put it together. Above ground pools are made of galvanized sheet steel with a plastic liner that fits inside it once you have assembled the pools side panels.

With this type of pool allow a weekend to build it with the help of a couple of friends. The main other points to consider are your electricity feed for the water pump and water heater. These items should not be overlooked as if the proposed pool location is 50-yards from your house then installing a "Safe" electric feed may mean digging a two foot deep trench to safely secure the power cable in. (And that may take more than a weekend to do!)

If you have opted for a block and liner pool installation then with a little effort you can end up with a very smart looking pool that will add more money to the value of your house than you spent building it.

With a block and liner swimming pool you can either hire a digger yourself to dig out ...

Energy For Swimming Training

by  Lee Stanbury 3/16/2011

Distance swimmers spend more time in the pool during practice and competition than other swimmers. Longer training hours mean a greater need for fuel. Distance swimmers have higher energy and carbohydrate requirements to meet training goals and individual growth needs, this also is of course a factor with other distances but distance swimming can be highly demanding, the last thing you need is to run out of energy half way into a race!

Distance swimmers also need to consume adequate fluids. Training indoors in a heated pool or outdoors in the sun can increase sweat loss, even if it’s not obvious when surrounded by water.

Many distance swimmers do not consume sufficient food and beverage before early morning practices, often out of fear of stomach distress. Unfortunately, swimmers who skip meals or rely on fast or convenience-type foods will run out of fuel, fail to recover properly and perform poorly, there should always be enough fuel on board to work a set out fully!

To achieve peak performance, distance swimmers need to develop nutrition plans for practice and competition. The following tips will help distance and other swimmers achieve success in the pool.

Eat several small meals and snacks throughout the day. Eating before, during and after competition/practice will increase energy and nutrient intake. Swimmers with higher energy requirements may need to increase the number of healthy snacks eaten during the day.

Prepare meals and snacks in advance. Yogurt, fruit, bagels or sandwiches can be brought from home and consumed between races or during end-of-practice ...

Knowing All About Water Safety

by  Abhishek Khandelwal 3/16/2011

While swimming maybe an endeavor that is certainly very helpful. As far as maintenance and upkeep of physical well being is concerned, it is also imperative that one pays careful heed to all the related safety norms. This is particularly true for swimming since carelessness in this regard can even be fatal.

One of the foremost aspects that one needs to be careful about is water safety. Within this broad aspect, there are in turn several facets which one needs to look into. For instance, the quality of water in which one swims is extremely important. In many developing countries, it is often noticed that children and adults alike end up swimming in what is clearly highly contaminated water - that is something that needs to be avoided at all costs. Usually, most professional swimming pools where swimming is taught by instructors, do take care of this aspect very well, ensuring that water remains disinfected as well as thoroughly clean.

With regard to water safety, amateurs also need to be very careful about differentiated water levels in a swimming pool. Essentially, what they need to keep in mind is the fact that water levels in swimming pools are rarely the same uniformly. Instead, water is kept at varying levels, as per the heights of swimmers. Accordingly, portions of a swimming pool which are meant for children have a far lower water height than the portions meant for adults. Again, given the varying heights of adults, it is not only important to check ...

Benefits of Teaching Kids to Swim at an Early Age

by  Abhishek Khandelwal 3/16/2011

Teaching kids to swim at an early age can certainly have a wide range of benefits, least of all the fact that they can in turn grow up to be champion swimmers in their own right, rather early on.

Prior to that, it must be said that when it comes to teaching kids to swim at a very early age, one of the foremost advantages is that kids do not have any kind of fear of water or drowning at a very early age - which they tend to develop as they grow up. As a matter of fact, it is widely recognized and known that if infants are thrown into water, chances are good that they will manage to swim their way to safety, even if they have never really been taught how to swim. This because; swimming is largely an instinctive behavior; it need not really be taught. Yet, the majority of us do need to be taught how to swim simply because we had not been exposed to swimming in our very early formative years. Over time, fear crept in and instincts somehow ended up taking a back seat.

From a health point of view as well, it must be said that teaching kids to swim at an early age certainly has a wide range of benefits. For instance, kids who swim regularly tend to have better physiques and few ailments. Their overall strength and vitality remains robust for long and they also grow up to be health conscious ...

The Innumerable Benefits of Swimming

by  Abhishek Khandelwal 3/16/2011

Swimming is an activity that humans have partaken since times immemorial. While today swimming is looked at as a competitive sport, that was not always the case in the past. Often it was simply a case of human survival wherein not knowing swimming also meant grave danger to human lives, especially when air travel had not yet come to the fore and the preferred and often only means of long distance travel was by ship. Even prior to that stage, crossing smaller rivers and lakes, ponds, etc. invariably meant swimming across.

Consciously or unconsciously, all of this swimming did keep mankind fit and healthy. And it was with this realization that as time passed, the innumerable benefits of swimming came to the fore. For instance, swimming proved to be an excellent instrument for building stamina. It also ensured that we remained fit and active without putting on unnecessary weight or building up bad cholesterol since swimming helped burn energy rapidly.

Further, swimming has consistently proven to be an excellent instrument for building muscles on our bodies and having all round well toned figures. That is because; as we swim, practically every muscle in our body is used to the fore, as we make our way through water. As a result, our joints too tend to get in good shape. The overall blood circulation in our systems also improves considerably.

Among the various benefits of swimming, relaxation of the mind is also right at the top. That is because; swimming does have an amazingly ...

Swimming Pool Safety Precautions - Play It Safe To Keep It Fun

by  C. Miles 3/16/2011

A swimming pool can be a dangerous place if you or others using it do not take care to follow some basic safety principals. Miss-use of it can easily result in serious injury or death. However by establishing a simple set of rules, and ensuring that people follow them (Especially small children) then your pool should be perfectly safe to use.

Simple pool safety tips: -

Never run near or around the edge of the pool, as splashing from the pool will result in wet concrete, which can cause you to slip and injure yourself.

Never take any real glasses or bottles anywhere near your pool and especially not into it. A broken glass in your swimming pool can result in severe injury. So only ever use pool safe plastic unbreakable glasses. They float, meaning they are doubly safe.

Never take any form of electrical appliance near your pool. Knocking your music system into your pool could quite literally kill everyone in it.

Always ensure people are aware of how deep your pool is. In general a lot of home swimming pools are not deep enough to dive into safely. Diving or bomb diving into the wrong end of it can result in a broken neck or back injury. This is a serious risk and one of the most common pool injuries.

Lastly when it comes to children and pools, no child of fourteen years or under should ever be allowed to use it unattended. In addition it is a very good idea if you have ...

Swimming Pool Water Features And Heating Options

by  C. Miles 3/16/2011

Water Features
On their own with just you swimming in them, a pool can be a very quiet place, and whilst this can be relaxing in itself, the sound of running water can be even more relaxing. Indeed the sound of running water is known to relax the mind and hence the body. The use of indoor water features in Japan is a good example of this.

So why not add a water feature to your pool? You could add a waterfall with water cascading into your swimming pool. This is a great feature to have as you can stand underneath it and let the water falling down pummel your shoulder muscles to relax them.

Or you could add a solution like that found in modern spa hotel swimming pools, and that is the addition of various types of in-pool, and outside of the pool water jets. If you go to a hotel spa you will now very often find various (often odd looking) stainless water jets that you can switch on whilst sitting at the edge of the pool.

These numerous jets do anything from pummeling your back and shoulders with water, through to blasting water up at your feet whilst you are seated poolside.

Installing such water features in your swimming pool does not cost as much money as you would think. However if you like the idea of adding such a feature just bear in mind that whilst they maybe added later, they will cost far less if you install them at ...
