Why Should Fish Be Included in a Healthy Diet?

by  Virginia Brookins-Brown 5/13/2012

Protein is a very important part of our diets and if we look for an extremely good source of protein we should consider fish. For an adult, one 6 ounce serving contains enough protein for an entire day. Fish is so very healthy, but not just because of its protein. Fish is not only high quality protein, but contains large stores of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins D and B2 riboflavin, as well as minerals, including iron, zinc, iodine, potassium, and magnesium.

Most people are not aware that our bodies do not produce Omega-3 fatty acids and that the best source of it is through fatty fish. Those fish would include salmon, herring, sardines, tuna, and halibut. Individuals vary in their dietary requirements; however, generally three servings per week of these fatty fish (about 6 ounces per serving) provide not only the protein requirements, but more importantly, the omega-3 fatty acids and the various vitamins and minerals contained in the fish.

Being a Native American from a tribe on the California coast, fish, especially salmon, has been an integral part of my diet all of my life. I am sure this has a great deal to do with my good health, good hair, good skin, and healthy brain. No one believes my true age. I attribute that to having so much fish in my diet.

It is well known that omega-3 fatty acids contribute to healthy hearts and brains. In fact, the list of the benefits of including fatty fish in ...

What Is So Great About L-Arginine?

by  Loren M Taylor 5/13/2012

Does it seem as though every time you turn around, you are faced with someone talking about L-arginine benefits? While many trends seem to come and go in the health field, this is one that is here to stay. This is because this is not a trend and it is not something unnatural. Anytime you can give your body more of what it should be getting in your diet, it’s beneficial. This is why people take vitamins, especially those that barely find the time to eat anything that doesn’t come out of a bag, box or can. People are trying it and experiencing for themselves how great they feel!

What is L-arginine?

Some are under the assumption that this is some type of artificial substance, but L-arginine is actually an amino acid that naturally occurs in the human body. This chemical building block can be consumed in poultry, fish, red meat and dairy products. However, it can also be produced in a laboratory, which is much more convenient to squeeze into even the most restrictive diet.

What it’s Used For

If you ask a dozen different people about L-arginine benefits, you will likely get a different reply from each one. Although some take it simply for its overall beneficial properties, there are also many that take it for one specific reason.

This amino acid is often recommended for blood vessels and heart conditions, including chest pain, congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease and high blood pressure. This is because it ...

Benefits of Natural Supplements

by  Bethany J Trezvant 5/13/2012

For decades mankind has been dumping all sorts of toxins and chemicals into the environment. Finally, someone got smart, and such federal legislation as the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act were enacted. However, there are still many questionable and unnatural ingredients can be found in our food, health supplements and medications. There has been an ongoing debate about natural vs. synthetic vitamins going on for years. Natural brands omit the artificial colors which is a positive thing. Natural forms of vitamins and other natural health supplements are usually superior to synthetic forms. For example, Vitamin E’s natural form is D-alpha tocopherol and the synthetic form is DL-alpha tocopherol. Evidence has shown that the natural D-alpha form is much more useful to the body than the synthetic DL-alpha form. Be sure to read the label to see what you have.

In an effort to get healthier, many people have started to exercise and eat right. A part of this quest to achieve a healthier lifestyle often includes weight loss supplements. Synthetic weight loss pills have been shown to have numerous side effects that may be harmful. Natural Supplements are safe for long term use simply because they are composed of natural herbs and other ingredients. But artificial diet pills may have chemical ingredients that can cause unpleasant side effects, and some of those may be fatal. Synthetic diet pills have been shown to cause high blood pressure, racing heart beats, heart palpitations, dizziness, nausea, insomnia, nervousness and depression. These ...

Probiotics: Benefits of the Friendliest Miracle Warriors

by  Boro Petric 5/13/2012

Did you know that there is a veritable universe within your body? And I’m not talking about anything spiritual here. There are millions of tiny, living creatures living, thriving, and even doing battle in your body.

Now, before you run off to the doctor or local exorcist to get rid of these creatures, it’s time to take a deep breath. The microscopic life forms I’m talking about are probiotics. And you can think of them as your own, personal army that helps to promote digestive health and overall energy levels.

Unfortunately, though, many people don’t have enough probiotics in their bodies, and are not getting the massive probiotics benefits provided by these tiny warriors.

Understanding Probiotics

Whole volumes of scientific research have been dedicated to the research of probiotics. But you don’t have to be a scientist to understand how they work. For starters, you need to get the idea that all microorganisms are bad out of your head. We get inundated with reports that bacteria, viruses and other microscopic organisms are wreaking havoc with our health. And to some degree that is true.

But, as you know, the universe has ways of keeping things in balance - a Yin for every Yang. And probiotics are the "good guy" bacteria that wage war against intruders and help your body process the foods that you eat. As you can see, the probiotic benefits your body gets from these bacteria are pretty significant.

The probiotics in your digestive system work by co-digesting ...

If exercising and adjusting your diet has not helped you reach your weight loss goal then you can try to lose weight with iodine supplement. The thyroid gland is the small gland that is found in your neck. It plays a very important role in regulating some important functions of the body. First and foremost, you have to consult your physician. Your physician will be doing some testing in order to determine if you have an underactive thyroid gland. The series of tests include imaging tests such as x-rays and CT scans as well as blood tests. This is done in order to find out whether you are suffering from hypothyroidism due to iodine deficiency. Even if you have hypothyroidism, in some cases it is not necessarily caused by iodine deficiency. You have to understand that iodine supplementation cannot help you in losing weight if you are not deficient. Therefore, it would be wise to speak to your doctor first before you can make certain that there ...

What Are the Best Food Sources of Vitamin D?

by  Josh Frey 12/23/2011

Vitamin D deficiency is a widespread issue for two primary reasons: we’re not getting enough sun and we’re not getting enough vitamin D in our diets.

For optimal health, I recommend getting at least 2000 IU a day, and considering supplementing to reach those levels if your diet is lacking in vitamin D rich foods or you’re not getting as much sun as you could be (or you live in a cloudy region).

However, supplementation isn’t the right choice for everyone. Some of us (myself included) try to get as many essential nutrients through natural sources and only supplement when getting sufficient amounts from food and other sources isn’t possible.

Although the word "natural" gets thrown around a lot and is a very poor indicator of whether a food or product is healthy or not (the poison Arsenic, for example, is all natural), what I mean by natural in this case is vitamin D food sources that aren’t manufactured or synthetic. In other words, real, whole foods.

Again, as mentioned in the other article, vitamin D supplementation is a good choice for a lot of people, so it’s definitely something to seriously consider. But it’s always BEST to get as many of your essential nutrients from whole foods and sun exposure.

Food Sources of Vitamin D
Very few foods in nature are good sources of vitamin D. This is one of the main reasons that vitamin D deficiency is so common, since it’s very easy to leave these foods out of your diet.

Vitamin C for Colds and Flu

by  Kevin Joseph Frank 12/23/2011

In the United States, five to 20 percent of Americans get flu every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). About 200,000 people are hospitalized due to flu complications including high fever, dehydration and fatigue. More than a billion around the world catch the common cold every year.

Whenever the cold and flu season is peaked, people reach for vitamin C as the primary remedy. Others rely on it as a preventive measure. It was first used as cold treatment in the 1970s. Nowadays, it’s so popular that people seek this vitamin through food supplements, fortified juices, fruits and vegetables.

In fact, vitamin C is touted as the most famous nutrient. Ask anyone what vitamins they know and vitamin C will always be one of the top answers. Studies show that in this country, more than 40 percent of adults take vitamin C supplements. In other parts of the world, the rate is 25 percent.

What is Vitamin C?
Vitamin C, otherwise known as ascorbic acid, is an essential vitamin and antioxidant needed by the body for the maintenance of muscles, blood vessels and bones. It also regulates the formation of collagen and the body’s absorption of iron, also an important nutrient.

It’s water-soluble so it can easily be excreted from the body if there is excess amount. Too bad though it cannot be manufactured by the human body. Humans along with chimps, bats, birds and guinea pigs are some of the few creatures that are not able to make their own vitamin ...

The Wellbeing Benefits of Olive Leaf Extract

by  Erin B Roberts 12/23/2011

If you’re concerned about your wellbeing, you’re bound to hear someone make mention of olive leaf extract. Olive leaf extract is the hot topic at the moment, with many people realising how beneficial it can be to your health! If you’re wondering if you should try this extract, first read a little about what it is, why it’s so special, and how it can help you.

What is olive leaf extract?

It is made from the fresh leaves of the olive plant. What many people do not realise is that this commonly overlooked part of the plant is high in healthy antioxidants! In fact, olive leaf has been shown by two Australian Universities to contain 30 times more antioxidants than the equivalent amount of virgin olive oil. What’s the Difference Between Prebiotic and Probiotic Supplements?

by  Lang Know 12/23/2011

Prebiotic and probiotic supplements are very different. Both are supplements that are for your digestive system. Where they differ is in the method of how they work.

What are Probiotics?

Probiotics are manmade live bacteria that can help with digestive problems. Products that have probiotic properties include things like ice cream, and yogurt. Probiotics add to your digestive system’s actual live bacteria to help in your digestion. However, it doesn’t help you balance or grow your own good bacteria.

Once you stop using the probiotic, the good bacteria goes to what it was before you took the supplement. It’s not beneficial in the long term.

What are Prebiotics?

Prebiotics are supplements that contain soluble fibre and is something that humans cannot digest. Prebiotics are found in nature and in certain foods. Raw banana, onions, apples and kiwi fruit have some prebiotic properties. However, the good bacteria in your digestive system feed on prebiotics. Having a healthy diet with prebiotics is important for optimal digestive health.

Without prebiotics the good bacteria in your digestive system can be overpowered by the bad bacteria and you could develop some bad digestive problems like Diverticulosis.

Prebiotics help your digestive system have a good balance of good bacteria.

Unlike probiotics, prebiotic supplements help your body maintain its own level of good bacteria for digestion.

Health Benefits of Prebiotics

A healthy digestive system promotes overall well-being. Some things that you can benefit for this include:

· easier absorption of vitamins and nutrients

· strengthened immune system

· normal bowel movements with no pain or strain

· overpower and eliminate bad ...
