Diving Underwater - Scuba Diving What An Experience

by  David Duane Wilson 3/16/2011

Have you been considering learning to scuba dive. I overheard my coworkers talking about how much fun it was and I took the bait. I took lessons and entered a different world. Once your head slips below the surface there is an explosion of color, the strangest organisms you will ever see, the sensation of weightlessness and you have the ability to fly. The following is my account of the dive that turned this sport into a passion for me. Read on and enjoy, see if scuba might be something you would be interested in.

It was in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico along the Pacific coast that I made my first real dive into salt water. I had been certified basic scuba diver for about two months and had made several fresh water dives in the lakes of central Texas. I thought that this type of diving could not be surpassed. A friend suggested that I join a dive club in the Houston area which offered dive travel at group discounts. I went to my first club meeting at Rice University, joined and signed up for the next trip they were offering.

That trip took me to Puerto Vallarta. Upon arrival, we made an afternoon check out dive off the beach. Once the dive master was satisfied with our abilities, he assigned buddy teams for the morning dive trip. Up early and eagerly waiting at the dock our boat finally arrived. A line was formed and gear, tanks and supplies were loaded. The ...

Underwater Wealth

by  Greg Pierce 3/16/2011

Having been traveling to some parts of the Asian archipelago and the haven of diving that is Thailand, I have some how seen some of the world’s best underwater secrets. Tubbataha reef in Palawan, a world heritage site boasts of undaunted underwater treasures that never failed to lure divers from around the world. Apo reef in Mindoro as well as Apo Island Marine sanctuary in Negros Island have unparalleled marine biodiversity in this part of the world. The Sipadan point in the southern part of Asia has consistently topped the list of the world’s best. There is so much in Asia that is yet to be discovered and seen, and seeing them through eyes that are soaked in water meters deep is still the best way to behold this underwater marvel.

Ideal for coral growth, the tropics have never tailed in biodiversity as far as corals and tropical marine life is concerned. Many government as well as non-government organizations have joined forces and forged alliances committed to protect and preserve this heritage. The UN through its agency, UNESCO, has been aggressively promoting welfare and support to this endeavor through programs geared towards preserving this marine life. An increase in awareness among the people has been quite successful as can be deduced through incremental increases in local as well as foreign tourism in the areas.

The tropics’ wealth I should say is truly hidden beneath its azure waters. Its wealth lies upon every fish egg that hatches to continue the link to its ...

Scuba Diving Is Less Stressful When Your Weight Is Right

by  Joseph Jackson 3/16/2011

One of the most important scuba diving skills is proper weighting.

If you carry too much weight on a dive you fight to stay off the bottom. The extra weight drags you downward, and you must constantly adjust the air in your buoyancy control device (BCD), trying to keep yourself at an even level.

Plunging uncontrollably into the bottom kills coral. It stirs up the bottom (clouding the water).

Strap on too little weight and you float straight back to the surface every time you try to descend to diving depth.

Skyrocket to the surface because you’re under weighted and you risk injury to your lungs as they inflate faster than you can exhale the air from them.

Either way that battling to stay at one depth causes a huge amount of stress for you. Stressful diving creates anxiety. When you’re anxious and uncomfortable you suck air faster than current runs in the Gulf Stream. Your dive is short, and not fun.

When your weight is right for your diving setup you glide along smoothly at constant depth. Only your breathing affects your buoyancy as you ascend with your inhalations, and descend with your exhalations.

Since you don’t struggle for buoyancy control your dive is comfortable, with little to no stress.

During the basic open water certification course every diver learns to determine how much weight he needs. That lesson teaches us to float in the water without our BCD, scuba tank, and regulator. Then add weight until our eyes are level with the water’s surface.

Go through that ...

The Suunto D9 Dive Computer

by  Kris Mifsud 2/23/2011

Known as the first all-in-one dive computer, the Suunto D9 contains all the features needed for the most demanding of divers.

This top of the line computer from Suunto brings all the crucial dive information to ensure your safety during, and post, your dive, in one great piece of equipment.

Now let us take an in-depth view of the features which make up this great piece of diving equipment.
Wireless air integration

A great feature of the dive computer is its wireless air integration capabilities. You do however need to purchase the wireless transmitter separately, although you may find the complete package here.

The wireless air integration enables you to keep track of your air consumption and tank pressure and at the same time monitor depth and time. The remaining air time is numerically displayed during the dive whilst tank pressure is displayed in both numerical and graphical representation.

Digital navigation

The greatest feature of the Suunto D9 is its digital compass which is fully functional above and below water. Designed with the diver in mind, the compass can be accessed from both Dive and Time modes enabling continuous monitoring of other dive data. A graphically representation of a compass rose displays cardinal, half cardinal points and the current bearing which is numerically displayed.

Multi-mode features

With multimode versatility, Air, Nitrox and Gauge Mode, the D9 is designed to meet even the most demanding diver’s expectations. Whilst the Air mode is used for scuba diving on standard air, the Nitrox mode can be used for up to three nitrox ...

Information You Need to Know About Dive Computers

by  Kris Mifsud 2/23/2011

If you are thinking of buying a scuba diving computer and want to find one that suits your needs, it is important for you to understand some basic dive computer fundamentals. This article is designed to help you make an educated decision when buying your scuba dive computer.

Whenever you scuba dive, nitrogen will dissolve into your body’s tissue due to increased pressure. The deeper you dive the faster the nitrogen will dissolve in your body. If you do not keep this amount of nitrogen to acceptable levels you will increase the risk of getting decompression sickness.

The scuba computer is one of the most important pieces of scuba gear which will help you monitor your dive time and depth. With the help of computers you will get far more out of your diving experience. You can constantly monitor your depth, ascent rate and bottom times and a scuba computer will automatically recalculate your decompression status, which permits longer dive times while avoiding the risks of no-decompression time. It is an especially important tool for when you will be doing multiple dives on a single day.

Scuba computers come in all shapes and sizes. Some are wrist-mounted just like you wear a scuba watch whilst others fit into your instrument console. Certain higher end dive computers also have additional features which enable you to check how much air you have left in your cylinder whilst some models will also have an incorporated digital compass.

When using your Scuba computer keep these following tips in ...

How to Get the Best Snorkel Set

by  Megan Lambert 2/23/2011

The most commonly available accessory you can use for diving is the snorkel set. It doesn’t matter if it is meant for scuba diving or plain old snorkeling; the set can make a big difference in diving quality and comfort.

There are two available kinds of snorkel kits. The first one you will find is the mask and snorkel, alongside the swimming fins. The other type is the one which just has a mask and accompanying snorkel only. It means different all the time.

The components of snorkel sets are quite basic and as such, the sets are not very expensive. A snorkel is by itself not anything more than a curved plastic tube which measures about 16 inches and allows one to breathe and see underwater.

More modern snorkel types have a sump which makes it possible to drain accumulated water.

The dive mask is not a complicated piece. It is available in two common designs. There is the kind which has a larger surface area to look through while there are others which have a mask that consists of twin viewing areas. They are like optical glasses in some way.

So which design are you supposed to take? It depends on your preferences. Each is okay. There is nothing quite separating the two. Just consider that some dive masks normally have special features like a special coating to help reduce the glare that may arise.

To know which one suits you better, try to wear them one after the other and use several configurations ...

Automatic Divers Watch

by  Sandra Tiffany 2/23/2011

There are times in a person’s life when having a regular watch just does not cut it. This can happen in many situations, but mostly when someone is either working in a rainy environment, or somewhere when they have to submerge either their hands or their entire body into water.

In such instances it would be a great time for someone to do their homework and learn about divers watch. This wonderful invention is great for people who are going to be diving deep under the water and need to rely on a watch to tell them exactly how long they are going to be there. Nothing is worse when diving and realizing that you have been under the water for longer than directed, and that perhaps the water is becoming too cold. People who do not keep track of the time they spend under water also face the terrible danger of being stranded in shark infested waters during a peak time for shark infestation.

Storms also pose another a great danger to one in the water and is yet one more reason to be sure you are using the right type of a automatic divers watch that will tell you when an expected storm is due to arrive. Nothing says fear more than being stuck in the ocean during a storm because you forgot the time.

Having an divers watch will also let you know the exact time that you started your dive and it will let you know the exact time ...
