STRESS REALLY CAN KILL YOU - WHAT CAN YOU DO ABOUT IT?  by

 Donna Amos
10/6/2008 at 08:48
Stress is recognized as the number one killer today. The American Medical Association has stated that stress is the cause of 80-85% of all human illness and disease. The good news is we can do something about it.

Stress sends our bodies into an alarm reaction also called fight or flight response, and the body releases adrenaline, causing muscle tension, raised heart beat, increased breathing and perspiration, eyes dilate and the stomach may clench.

If the cause of the stress is not removed the body runs our of its reserve of body energy and immunity, and the body experiences "adrenal exhaustion". This leads to decreased stress tolerance, progressive mental and physical exhaustion, illness and collapse.

Running on Adrenaline

Adrenaline is designed to give us the energy necessary to survive life-threatening situations. When we are in a state of constant anxiety, the adrenal glands work overtime. Many of us are so tired out by our busy lives that we maintain an anxious state just to get the extra boost. We may even become dependent on adrenaline as our primary source of energy.

The problem is that our bodies are designed to use adrenaline only occasionally, for short periods of time. Overusing it stresses the adrenal glands, causing a variety of health problems -- some of them serious.

Some of the ways we keep our adrenaline pumping are:

* Rushing from one task to another
* Living with a constant hum of anxiety - the feeling that there is ...

THE REAL DEFINITION OF STRESS MANAGEMENT  by

 Stephanie Goddard
10/6/2008 at 08:47
Stress can be managed...but can it be cured?

The term "stress" has become a badge of honor in our current world of faxes, e-mail, and back-to-back schedules. When asked how we are doing, we inevitably answer, "Oh, I’m so busy; I am so stressed-out." To imagine answering: "Just feeling relaxed and enjoying today’s workload," would mean being labeled a slacker, or at best, odd.

In developing a stress management program we often mean exercise, eating differently, meditating, and getting enough sleep. It may be more useful to ask why these things would have to be "managed" or even mandated by a physician. Why do we have to take a class to do these things?

The answer is likely that you do not see yourself as a priority. You have not incorporated into your to-do list that you are also an important relationship that needs attention. You are a valuable tool in your life and you need to be "recharged" if you are to effectively run that life.

Once you see yourself as valuable and irreplaceable, you will naturally and effortlessly begin to maintain and exercise your body. You will not, however, follow your best friend’s regimen or the latest infomercial’s suggestion. You will find what works for your body, your life, and your abilities. You will like what you do to make sure your body is moved regularly and fed correctly.

While fat is stored, fitness is not. Natural principles govern our bodies, like the notion that we are not built to sit behind a ...

Also, many people practice yoga to relieve stress. Yoga is an ancient technique from India, which involves the practitioner to bend his or her body to a certain position. TIPS FOR COPING WITH STRESS  by

 Cheri Brennan
9/20/2008 at 16:34
The first step in coping with stress is learning what stress is all about, what causes it and what the signs are. Although it is often discussed, few people know exactly what stress is. Some people consider stress to be a fact of life, while others believe that stress is only a once in a while occurrence. While stress can be viewed as a very general, non-specific cause of illness it is very real and can manifest itself in serious physiological and psychological ways. Stress can be triggered by just about any event in our lives no matter how insignificant. Acquiring skills for coping with stress will help you avoid the serious illness that can be caused by stress including depression, migraines, ulcers and hypertension.

There are a number of different skills that people use for coping with stress. No two people react in exactly the same way to the same situation. It is important to learn what coping skills work for you.

The only way to reduce the negative effects of stress is to limit your body’s exposure and reaction to stressful situations. Coping with stress may seem quite difficult but it really comes down to identifying and managing your stress triggers, managing your time and avoiding burnout. Some stressful situations are easier to identify and anticipate the body’s response such as the stress we feel when going to a job interview or a first date. Other types of stress cannot be as easily predicted such as the loss of a ...

SEVEN CURES FOR DARKENED TIMES  by

 Lillie Oliver
9/20/2008 at 16:33
Manifestation is the materialization of thoughts and dreams into reality. As a very common way of functioning people have been performing manifestations without much thought to the process of how it all happens. However, over the past few years people have become more consciously aware of how to intentionally manifest things in order to make positive changes in their lives.
Practicing methods of using thoughts and feelings along with taking action have been the general keys to materializing desired lifestyles. Yet even with the insight of some of the greatest teachers on the laws of attraction, some people still become frustrated in failed attempts.

A book titled "The Hell I Can’t" by Terry McBride is an excellent real life example of some of the obstacles one may face as they take that journey to intentionally manifesting freedoms. After years of applying acquired spiritual knowledge and different techniques on how intentionally manifest his desire to heal, Mr. McBride finally discovered how a barrier could exist in ones belief system and neutralize applied efforts. Belief systems are often embedded into the subconscious they can seem near impossible to change even if you’re aware they are getting in your way. So even when this type of block is found, it may still take time to overcome it.

This is just one amongst many types of barrier so it’s understandable that there could be many reasons why people don’t succeed right away in attempts to manifestation intentionally. However this should not discourage one from continuing on in ...

EMOTIONAL WOUNDS - BANDAGES, BAGGAGE, BALMS AND BLESSINGS  by

 Daniel Benor
9/20/2008 at 16:33
We are often taught to ignore and bury our problems and upsets and to ’be strong.’ This is a temporary solution for distress that has serious drawbacks. Learning to identify and to release our feelings are much better ways of handling them. Varieties of self-treatment methods enable us to do this, with excellent results, including the release of anxieties about having problems in the first place.

Bandages

I was taught in medical school in the 1960s that psychological wounds, like physical wounds, are often best handled at the time of emotional injuries by bandaging them, ignoring them as best one could, and carrying on with life. This was then, and continues to be now, the prevalent attitude of the majority of people.

Most of us develop habits of doing just that from childhood, both on our own and with the encouragement of family, friends and other authority figures. We cover over our wounds, burying them in our unconscious mind, and do our best to ignore them, or better yet, to totally forget them.

In childhood, this may be truly helpful. When we have only a limited understanding of the world, and limited coping abilities, it far less painful to bury our hurts than to suffer with them.

’Billie’ started out in life a bright and cheerful girl with lots of curiosity and good energies. She had the misfortune to be born into a family stressed by her father’s limited earning capacity and her mother’s chronic depression, which was self-medicated with whiskey. Billie suffered neglect and ...

STRESS - ARE YOU A STRESS PUPPY?  by

 John Thackeray
9/20/2008 at 16:32
Stress is not something that our forefathers were familiar with, although their lives were surely filled with lots of traumatic events related to high mortality rates and incurable disease, but the concept of stress just wasn’t known as such. People definitely did suffer from breakdowns and depression, but the concept of stress was not recognized as an illness or a disease.

Today, stress seems to fill our lives and also appear to be mostly self-inflicted! Some personality types just seem to be more prone to stress than others. The first step in dealing with stress, much like dealing with alcoholism, is to acknowledge that you are suffering from stress. Most people who suffer from stress in fact are not aware of the fact, and only find out too late when they already have some type of heart disease, high blood pressure, neck and shoulder stiffness, or migraine problem identified. Or when their family make them aware of the fact that they are always in a hurry, never have time, have anger explosions for the slightest provocation and are, frankly, just miserable people to live with.

The personality type that is prone to stress is known as ’Personality type A’ - a concept that is well known by now after research done in the 1950s by Friedman and Rosenman, although the notion of using this personality type to predict heart disease risk has been falling out of favor recently. Apparently only people with personality type A who shows a lot of obvious, external ...

10 FOODS THAT CAUSE YOU STRESS  by

 Janine Michaels
9/20/2008 at 16:32
When you think about the effects of stress on the body, you usually think about external pressures that make you feel anxious. However, the foods you eat can also play a part in the level of stress you experience.

Some foods, like coffee and bacon, you may already be familiar with as foods that aren’t particularly good for you if you have diabetes or suffer from anxiety. However, there are several types of food that can stress out the body without you even realizing it. You may not feel it immediately, but it can be a long-term stress on major organs, which can lead to other ailments.

It’s important that you are aware of these foods so that you can make better choices in how you choose to include them in your diet.

Caffeine - a natural stimulant found in coffee, tea, chocolate and soda. Caffeine releases adrenaline, which can put undo wear and tear on your adrenal glands and interfere with your normal metabolism.

Cow’s Milk - cow’s milk contains casein which can be hard for some people to digest comfortably. Milk can also trigger allergies.

Alcohol - many people wrongly believe that having a couple of drinks will alleviate their stress. Actually, alcoholic beverages is the worst thing you can take when feeling stressed. Alcohol stimulates the adrenal glands, which leads to further feelings of stress and insomnia.

Sweets - while sugar gives you a quick boost, too much sugar will cause you to crash and can lead to irritability and poor concentration.

Red Meat ...

TECHNIQUES FOR MANAGING STRESS  by

 Cheri Brennan
9/20/2008 at 16:23
Over the last few decades the stress in our lives has risen exponentially. The need for effective stress management has risen as a result. Stress is defined as physical, mental or emotional strain or tension. Stress is how the body prepares us for what is to come and it is a reaction to events that have taken place. Some amount of stress is necessary and healthy. Good stress will motivate us and keep us focused on our tasks and goals. Problems arise when the stress levels get too high and begin to overwhelm us. Dealing with stress untreated or unmanaged for prolonged periods of time can lead to serious illnesses which can be both mental and physical.

While serious cases of stress and stress related illness should be treated by a medical professional, most cases can be managed with some simple techniques. Positive thinking, laughter, deep breathing and muscle relaxation can be done on your own and can be very effective.

The old saying "laughter is the best medicine," has a lot of truth to it. Laughing naturally relieves stress and helps to distract your mind from stressful thoughts. Try to spend some time with cheerful people. If you’re by yourself, pop in a funny movie or read a light hearted book.

Excessive worry has never helped to accomplish anything and can cause your stress levels to go through the roof. If you feel yourself constantly fretting, try to visualize positive things in your life. Try to remember a relaxing vacation you took ...

EFFECTS OF STRESS ON THE BODY  by

 Andrew Riley
3/23/2008 at 04:01
Stress is a condition or feeling experienced when a person perceives that one is required to give more than he or she is capable of giving personally and socially. Our body reacts to stress with physical, mental, and emotional responses.

Stress is part of our everyday life but if left unattended to, can cause severe damage to our body. While our body is designed to withstand stress up to a certain level, continuous stress without relief or relaxation can lead to numerous health problems. Researches have shown that one of the major contributors of disease in the human body is stress.

Effects of stress on the body

Studies have shown that stress affects the body’s immune system negatively causing the body to become more susceptible to a wide range of diseases and ailments. These ailments range from a simple cold to a much more deadly disease such as cancer. Do you know that 75-90% of all doctor’s office visits are for stress-related diseases and ailments?

One of the most common complaints from over stress is headaches and migraines. These are one of the effects of stress on the body that you can see almost instantly from over stress but there are those that lay dormant and will show it’s ugly side a few years down the road. These are the one that are dangerous and can be fatal. Headaches caused by stress are involuntary contractions of the head, scalp and neck muscles. If this were to left unattended to for a long period of ...

HOW TO MINIMIZE EVERYDAY STRESS  by

 Diana Wagner
3/23/2008 at 04:01
Are you working too hard? Trying too hard? Being pushed too hard?

I am a reformed (well, attempting to reform!) workaholic. I know that there are many people like myself who find themselves working all the time. You just have to finish up a project one night, and then get to work early the next morning to put the finishing touches on that, and then you have to go on a business trip for three days, and then you have a meeting with your boss, and then you have to make a new presentation because there was one little mistake in the old one, and the list goes on and on and on.

It is time to take a break! Very few people actually enjoy living life that way, and almost no people can live that way and stay emotionally and physically healthy. It just isn’t good to be stressed all the time and have deadlines shoved down your throat!

I learned this the hard way. I was a workaholic who was always on the go. One day I came to my senses and realized that every now and then I needed to take time for myself! I tried it. It was hard at first, other things would creep in and distract me from my goal. I kept trying every now and then to make some time for myself. It got easier eventually. One thing that I have found really helps me remember that the day is my day (and not my boss’s!) ...
