IS EMAIL HARASSMENT ILLEGAL?  by

 Claudia Kim
10/6/2008 at 08:43
Not so long ago, a girl committed suicide because of messages that she was getting through the popular social networking site MySpace. This does not mean that MySpace is evil, but hopefully it was a wake up call for parents to know what their children are doing online, even if they feel they are being snoopy. Though you may not think of messages through MySpace as being email, they are. Not everyone behaves online, and there are times when email addresses can be harassing in nature, and even dangerous.

The nature of email makes it possible for people to think they are sending out messages that are anonymous, but that is rarely the case. There are some that know how to do this, but most Internet users have no idea. They just assume leaving their name off of an account means they are untraceable. That is simply not true, as many people have found out. They may feel free to send messages that are sinister and harassing in nature because they think no one will know who they are.

Though the line between a heated and illegal email is gray, and not all locations or jurisdictions with the US have the same laws, there are some that are definitely illegal. Some districts have deemed anything harassing to be illegal, no matter if it is going through phone lines, mail letters, electronic communications, or in person. Those that have this type of harassment in mind often use email because they think it is ...

PUT AN END TO THAT NAGGING SPAM MAIL - RUN A REVERSE EMAIL LOOKUP  by

 Lindsay Bonn
10/6/2008 at 08:42
Though not all Spam is bad, the type that comes into your email box is probably not something with which you want to deal. Though there are some lucky people that never get it, most have had to deal with it on a daily basis. There is not always a lot you can do about spam, but you can use a reverse lookup to see where some of it is coming from. From there, you can see if there is anything else that you can do.

The problem with tracing the email address of someone sending spam is that they often change addresses. Most of the time, they get a new one for each mailing that they put out. That can mean a trace is useless for the most part. Some even know how to take over someone else’s computer so that it appears to come from a totally innocent person. If nothing else, you can let someone know they need to do something about that.

There are a few ways that you can run a email reverse lookup if that is what you want to do when you get spam in your inbox. You can see if the email comes up when you put it into a search engine. Most of the time, if the email is from someone who mails out spam, you are going to find it on sites complaining about troublesome email addresses. Other times, you may find a hit that gives you more information.

You can also see ...

ANTI SPAM FILTERING - DO YOU USE ANTI SPAM FILTERING?  by

 Nicolaas Theron

Spam email can be stopped or controlled by using a spam filter. Email filtering software can be installed by you on your computer or sometimes your internet service provider may provide a spam filter on their mail server. You will have to contact them for more details.

There are a lot of different spam software that you may choose from. Some are better than others and some you buy and others you may use for free. Popular spam software includes Mailwasher, Spambutcher, McAfee, Cloudmark and others.

Microsoft Office Outlook has some features that helps you to block spam email. The most prominent feature is probably Microsoft’s ’Junk email Filter’ which screens out spam. Other features include the safe senders list, safe recipients list and blocked senders list.

Spam protection is an important part of managing your electronic mail. Spam protection tools can prevent email address harvesting from happening to you. Keep your computer and email program free from junk email.

There are a few ways how you can prevent spam. You should stop spammers from getting your email address by not posting it directly on your webpage or encrypting it. This prevents the ’spam bots’ from harvesting it. You also need a good spam filter as well as anti-virus software that constantly checks your incoming emails.

Once you have been spammed, you need spam solutions. To check if your email address is published on a website, use the Google search engine and do a search for your email address. Generally speaking your address is at ...

ESSENTIAL TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR INBOX FREE OF SPAM  by

 Lydia Quinn

Spam is one of the worst things about using the Internet. Nearly everyone who uses email has to deal with some amount of spam each and every day. It wastes our time, our bandwidth and increases our stress. Thankfully, there are also many ways we can drastically lessen the amount of spam we receive. Here are some tips:

Filters

This may seem obvious, but many people don’t bother to use simple filters built in to their email programs. While a simple filter for "something" won’t stop every spam about "something", it will help to lessen it, especially if you get many duplicate emails on the same subject. Read your manual about setting up spam filters, you’ll be glad you did.

Free Email

Using any of the big free email services, like Yahoo, Gmail or Hotmail, you’ll receive dozens or hundreds of spams a day, even if you’ve never given your email out to anyone! Luckily, these free email services also have some of the best spam filters. Yahoo, for instance, puts suspicious email into a "Bulk Mail" folder, where you can still access it. Gmail uses a "Spam" folder. Both do a good job of keeping unwanted email out of your main inbox. However, Gmail seems to do the best job overall with few spams making it into your inbox. All in all, using a free email service is a good way to reduce the spam you receive, especially if you’re used to using Outlook or AOL.

Disposable Email Addresses

Another way to reduce spam is ...

FILTERING THE SPAM FROM YOUR INBOX  by

 Helen Cox
3/23/2008 at 09:44
In 2001 there were merely a few spam emails making the rounds, with only 8% of all emails sent worldwide being accounted as spam. In 2007 this number has grown an alarming amount and spam emails now account for 50% of all the email messages that are sent.

Many people class spam emails as being unethical and a disruption of your life. There are many different ways that a person can get a message across to you such as printing it on a billboard or through telemarketing; however email is considered, by some, as being the most intrusive as it is so cheap to send a message to a bulk amount of email addresses.

One good piece of news however for people who suffer from spam on a regular basis is that as the amount of spam messages grow and as the spammers who send them become more advanced so does the spam filtering software that stops them. Most of these filters work by scanning the email messages that you receive for keywords that are commonly associated with spam messages. However spammers are aware of this and have started to use tricks in order to get around these filters. These tricks involve manipulating certain words within a message in the hope that the filter will bypass them. The outcome of these tricks is messages appearing containing words that have letters missing or words in which some of the letters have been replaced with numbers. These tricks sadly mean that spam filters only ...

METHODS OF SPAM FILTERING  by

 Helen Cox

Spam is an annoyance that has been around as long as the Internet itself. Every one of us who has an active email account and who is a frequent user of the Internet has more than likely experienced the growing problem of spam at some point.

Whether you use your email account for business or for pleasure it doesn’t matter to the spammer, all the matters to them is getting their message across to you. Once we have fallen victim to our first spam email the process never seems to stop; we just seem to start getting more and more and we are left wondering how the spammers got our email account address in the first place. Spammers ’harvest’ our email addresses off the Internet. If you have ever posted your email address anywhere on the Internet such as a forum then chances are you are being signed to a spammers mailing list as we speak.

Many people class spam as unsolicited and commercial when it really should merely be classes as automated. As that is the way spammers send their mail; it is automated. However it should be noted that if you are signed up to newsletters or if you have purchased anything from the Internet you will still be sent emails about these things even though these are also classed as being automated.

The most common content of spam messages are products being advertised, which makes up 25% of spam messages, financial messages, which is 20% of spam messages, adult content, ...

SPAMMERS AND YOUR EMAIL ACCOUNT  by

 Helen Cox
3/23/2008 at 09:43
Do you remember how useful email was before spam? It’s been that long that many of us don’t and we have merely accepted that when you sign up an email account you are excepting the fact that you are going to become another victim of spam on a daily basis.

The sending of spam or bulk mail sadly works due to the fact it is such a cheap medium to use to get a message to thousands of people at the same time. The cost of spam always lies with the receiver as it costs time, money and resources to deal with the flood of spam mail that comes through our inbox on a daily basis; this is especially evident in the work place where numerous hours are lost while employees sort through their mail to actually read ones that are genuine.

If you don’t already have a spam filter software set up on your email account I thoroughly suggest that you do so as a spam filter will help to stop you becoming more of a victim of spam. A spam filter will stop spam in its tracks before it gets anywhere near your inbox.

Spam is a cat and mouse game as spammers are constantly trying to outwit the spam filters. This is why it is important that you ensure you have an up-to-date spam filter set up on your email account and that you keep check on this to ensure that if your filter does need up dating that you ...

YOU ARE THE SPAM PROBLEM!  by

 Walter Babigian
3/23/2008 at 09:42
Let me start by saying if after reading this you find you are part of the problem, then good, this article did its job! But don’t stop there. Do something about it! Everyday, I get complaints from people about the large amount of spam they receive, or how their computer is acting up, or they find they have a computer infection, or I read articles about how the amount of spam is constantly increasing. Well, if this sounds like you, or someone you know then do something about it.

First, over 95% of the spam we all receive is sent through botnets. What is a botnet you ask? Well a botnet is a group of compromised computers that is controlled by hackers, spammers, and or organized crime that are used to send spam and attack other computers or networks. These botnets (or groups of infected computers) can be as large as tens of thousands. Where do they get that many computers you ask? Well...you. Yes, many of you reading this article may have a computer at home or at work that is part of a botnet. Your computer could be sending spam to others all over the world without your knowledge or attacking another computer right now! Don’t believe me? Here are just two articles this month about the problem... "Most spam comes from just six botnets" and "Rent-a-bot gang rises from DDos ashes". Both of these articles are from the "The Register" IT website.

What just makes me crazy when I ...

FIND OUT WHAT IS PHISHING & HOW IT AFFECTS PEOPLE  by

 Kelly Hunter
1/21/2008 at 08:57
A certain saying claims that crime does not pay but the behavior of the criminals involved in such crimes shows otherwise. You find a number of these criminals involved in different types of crimes of one nature or the other over a long period of time. The different types of crimes being committed often vary in their nature and the ingenuity of the people who hatch these schemes. With each new technology meant to counteract the effects of crimes, you find criminals who develop devious means in order to circumvent the various measures that were designed to keep them out. The internet is one are of technology that criminals have also invaded and which they now stake their claim. Billions of dollars are lost annually to Internet crime and time and over again people keep falling for these same scams that deprive them of their money. Phishing is one such crime that has come to light in recent times and to protect yourself you should understand what it is all about.

Phishing sound similar to "fishing" and in actual fact the former term has something to do with the latter. Scammers send out a lot of mails just the way a fisherman casts out various nets. A few of such mails will get victims just the way a few of the nets that fishermen cast will catch fish. If you follow the logic this way you’ll understand the basic logic behind the scourge that criminals call phishing. The email you get ...

YOUR BUSINESS AND WEB FILTERING  by

 Helen Cox
1/21/2008 at 08:56
Web filtering is one of the most controversial subjects in relation to Internet use. However with 52% of businesses reporting a misuse of Internet resources in the work environment is web filtering an essential to ensure productivity?

Web filtering, also known as content control software, determines what content will be available on a particular machine/network. It is all about access control and ensuring that users only get access to content that they need whilst stopping potentially offensive material. It stops wasted working hours that are spent browsing the internet for personal use rather than working.

Web filtering software Access policies can be set to individual user level and applied by time, date and location. Millions of URLs are categorised in 7 main categories and 70 sub categories. This continuously updated database ensures accurate control. Detailed reports also allow organisations to accurately monitor internet use. Real-time logs display which sites and downloads users have attempted to access and if they were allowed or not.

With a web filtering software HTTP and FTP requests are also scanned for viruses and spyware, allowing your business to feel secure as threats are stopped before they reach your network. It also stops the downloading of music and films meaning there is no burden on internal IT systems and more available bandwidth.

Many companies point to legal liability, productivity, and bandwidth usage as concerns that arise when employees view inappropriate web sites, shop online incessantly before the holidays, or download and play MP3 files throughout the day.

So can’t employers talk ...

SPAM BLOCKERS  by

 Helen Cox
1/21/2008 at 08:56
As most of us are aware nearly all email accounts come with some sort of email filter setting that you can change to try and cut down spam email. Sure it works ok but spam still gets through and if someone emails you who isn’t already on your contact list well its goodbye to them as they are treated to the same courtesy as junk mail.

Never reply, never send details never send money and try not to even open them - yes I’m referring to spam. For such a small word it causes such big problems; for both business and home. Spam or junk mail or unsolicited commercial email, however it is referred to the end result is always the same, an inbox full of useless junk.

This is why owning a spam blocked is so important. With our inboxes being flooded with spam we have the frustration of removing it only to see it come back.

There are already many ways of targeting spam emails like blacklisting email addresses and web sites, banning IP addresses and scanning the words in a subject box. However spammers adapt to these anti-spam targets and change their identity.

No email application doesn’t have a spam problem and there is a spam blocker out there that will suit everybody. It doesn’t matter if you’re tied to a desk or travelling the world you can still block spam effectively and quite easily. For those of you on a tight budget there are also plenty of free spam blockers ...

WHY SPYWARE IS SO DANGEROUS TO YOU  by

 Andres Berger
1/21/2008 at 08:55
One of the Bad Guys is Spyware and among the very bad Spyware we find "malicious phishing". People who create Phishing sites are skilled computer technicians and basically, talented people. They choose to act in a cowardly manner and like a thief in the night, attack computers in order to obtain personal information from the users. Rather than use their talent to improve and make the Internet more secure for everyone, they hide behind web forgeries and create havoc for others. People who hide behind web forgeries have a Napoleonic complex. There are two main reasons for creating web forgeries, which are in reality Spyware and some of these could contain malware such as a Trojan or worse.

This form of Spyware called Phishing, is a process of trying to fool people into entering personal information into a form, which they can use later to access your accounts. The forgery may appear to be from PayPal, Microsoft, Mozilla, Google or even your Bank website asking for personal information missing from your profile. The email message will say you need to update your profile information. However, the legitimate sites would never send such a message. You should never respond to these sites and the best step to take is click on forward and send the email to Spoof@(the name of the website).

If you update this profile form, the Spy will have your personal information in his/her hands in minutes. Once this fake profile form returns to the Spy, your personal information can ...

STOPPING SPAM - SOME USEFUL TECHNIQUES  by

 Helen Cox
1/21/2008 at 08:54
Spam has existed for about as long as the Internet has. Across the Internet there are various ways in which spam can be posted. Spam in the form of emails remains the most dominate type of spam present on the Internet. 90 billion spam emails sent daily worldwide; a figure that that has more than doubled since 2005 at which point it stood at 30 billion.

As well as spam emails, spam can be seen across the Internet in the form of various aspects of media such as, websites, guestbook’s, forums and link spamming, Link spamming is when a normal link is manipulated to take you to a spammer’s site so that the site gains more hits and therefore increases the sites page rank. As well as this, links can be manipulated and placed on websites where the links tag looks innocent but when it is actually clicked it takes you to sites containing, for example adult content.

These along with email spamming happen on a regular basis, as you’re probably already too much aware of. Even if you have never posted in a chat room or forum but merely signed up to one, your details are still there, making it possibly for spammers to get hold of them in a way that is known as harvesting. Spammers use chat rooms and forums and ’harvest’ email addresses that are posted on the site or that appear as member’s username. Due to this it is advised that if you need to give your ...

SOME SPAM FILTERING FACTS  by

 Helen Cox
1/21/2008 at 08:54
Do spam filters work? Even though it is estimated that 90 billion spam emails are sent worldwide every day the use of spam filters is still questioned.

The term spam filter can also be known as anti-spam software. This piece of software analysis’s your incoming email and uses a number of rules to decide whether the mail that you are receiving is legitimate email or not. So in answer to whether spam filters work or not the answer is yes. The extent as to how good they work depends on the spam filter that you have chosen. Some spam filters work better than others.

A decent spam filter will block about 99% of spam through filtering ’buzz’ words that refer to adult content and medical supplies, which are mainly based on weight loss supplements. As well as filtering words based on a blacklist, a spam filter will also block explicit images.

Another feature of most spam filters is to scan for viruses. This is done on both inbound and outbound messages. Any viruses that are found are then blocked straight away. This feature is especially important to business owners whose reputation could be at risk if viruses are spread through to clients through messages that are in their outbox.

When we look at emails we can tell straight away what it spam mail and what is a genuine email, most the time without even having to open the message. To a computer however all the emails that you receive look the same, meaning your ...
