ESSENTIAL TIPS FOR SECURE ONLINE TRADING  by

 Liam Derbyshire
10/6/2008 at 08:28
The internet has caused a sensational boom in the business world by allowing individuals and businesses to conduct online trading with customers all over the world. The most exciting aspect of doing online trading is that it can be done from the comfort of your home. Unfortunately, just as in real life, unscrupulous minds have soured the fun for everyone by engaging in the criminal activities of internet fraud and theft of sensitive financial information of customers. Doing online business seems like a daunting prospect to the uninitiated who has little or no knowledge of the basics of secure trading. However, things are not as grim as they might seem. It is very easy to protect ourselves from internet fraud by taking care to follow certain precautions when doing business online. One of the first things to do before going ahead with a trade deal on the internet is to perform a background search on the business you will be dealing with. Such information can be gleaned from the various credit agencies and trade institutes. If still in doubt, you can also seek out information from the chambers of commerce.

It’s always an excellent idea to ask as many questions as possible. Legitimate traders will be quite eager to answer all your queries pertaining to their business and will even provide references on demand. Since appearances can be very deceptive, don’t be fooled by a really attractive website into believing that the company is honest. Be especially wary if the company ...

4 COMPUTER CRIMES THAT COULD DESTROY YOUR ONLINE MARKETING BUSINESS  by

 Jerry Olasakinju
10/6/2008 at 08:28
Identity Theft:
This is the most notorious crime that could bring a load of problems on an Internet marketer’s head. Identity theft occurs when customers’ personal information, which includes their addresses, passport information, banking details, credit card information are leaked on to the Internet. This leakage could happen as a result of some hackers prying into a legitimate online shopping site and stealing these pieces of information. Millions of dollars are lost yearly due to this crime. This malaise has affected many online shoppers

Illegal Downloading:
Whether you are offering services or selling certain products online, sometime an illegitimate user using very powerful software can download your products without the due payment. Users who shouldn’t have had an access to them have regularly downloaded thousands of music files, movies, e-books and other products. Online marketers are hugely affected by this crime, which is increasing at alarming rate around the world.

Scams:
Scams are hard to detect nowadays, because most scammers pretend they are doing a right business and lure customers to buy goods and services on their sites, but which they would never deliver. Even some scammers have filtered into well-known shopping sites and deceive gullible buyers from parting with their money but shy away from delivering the products they had purchased. There have been tales of woes on auction and trading sites recently about scams.

Creation and Distribution Of Viruses:
The rate at which viruses are being created and distributed is high nowadays. Some viruses are quite destructive that they could destroy your computers or incapacitate ...

CREATING STRONG HACK-PROOF PASSWORDS IN 5 EASY STEPS  by

 Silki Garg
10/6/2008 at 08:27
Your passwords are the keys you use to access personal information that you’ve stored on your computer and in your online accounts. Do I need to highlight their importance?

If criminals or other malicious users steal this information, they can use your name to open new credit card accounts, apply for a mortgage, or pose as you in online transactions. In many cases you would not notice these attacks until it is too late.

Why are strong passwords needed?

Passwords can be the weakest link in a computer security scheme. Strong passwords are important because password cracking tools continue to improve and the computers used to crack passwords are more powerful. Passwords that once took weeks to break can now be broken in hours or sometime minutes.

Password cracking software use one of three approaches:

Intelligent guessing, Dictionary attacks and automation that tries every possible combination of characters. Given enough time, the automated method can crack any, yes I mean ANY, password.

Passphrase: Creating a strong, memorable password in 5 easy steps

1. Think of a sentence that you can remember. This will be the basis of your strong password or pass phrase. Use a memorable sentence, such as "The second letter of English Alphabet is B"

2. Take the first letter of each word of the sentence that you’ve created to create a new, nonsensical word. Using the example above, you’d get: "tsloeaib.

3. Add complexity by mixing uppercase and lowercase letters. It becomes "TsloEAiB"

4. Add some numbers. I add them after every two letters. You get "Ts2lo4EA6iB8". ...

PREVENTIVE MEASURES FROM INTERNET FRAUD  by

 David Urmann
10/6/2008 at 08:27
Internet frauds are generally another kind of fraud crimes which particularly use features of the Internet to intentionally commit fraudulent transactions from unsuspecting Internet users in an objective to steal money. Chat rooms, forum sites, e-mails and websites are the most common tools used by these criminals in performing their greedy acts. Because of the power of the Internet, these fraudulent acts can be easily transmitted in any part of the world. Millions of people can be potentially vulnerable to these crimes, whether an individual consumer or large companies of investors.

With the introduction of e-commerce as means to offer goods and services to consumers, these cyber criminals do their best to depict similar offers of legal merchants in order to make easy money from innocent people without actually providing the goods and services they promised. Because of these circumstances, it had greatly damaged the reputation of legitimate companies causing them a decrease on sales and at worst, leading to loss of millions of dollars.

Credit Card Fraud

Since a large number of percentages of consumers around the world use credit card as a convenient way of shopping or purchasing goods through the Internet, it had become a target for credit card fraud. This type of fraud was considered the number one setback in e-commerce business.

Credit card fraud is done by criminals by sending e-mail messages to unsuspecting victims requesting them to update their credit card information by directing them to the website which will then ask for their sensitive personal information including ...

ONLINE SHOPPING AND SECURITY  by

 Vincent Norman
3/20/2008 at 08:52
Online shopping is becoming increasingly popular, more and more people are using internet shopping everyday to purchase everything from CD’s to holidays and airline tickets. There are several advantages to shopping online such as being able to compare products and prices easily, being able to source hard to find items, and being able to shop at a time that is convenient to you among others. Many people are still concerned however about the security of shopping online, this article will address these concerns and advise you about internet shopping security.

Internet shopping can be a very convenient way to shop, any product or service imaginable is able to be purchased and paid for over the internet. You will be able to compare literally hundreds if not thousands of like products without having to trudge from store to store and face crowds and bad weather - you can shop from the comfort of your own home 24 hours a day. The internet is a very good place to shop for hard to get items for example a copy of an old CD or book that is no longer in production, you will be able to search the world to find it. Buying goods over the internet can also quite often be cheaper than purchasing goods in a retail store as the seller does not have costs such as rent, advertising and salespeople’s wages that are normally passed on to the consumer in the price of the item.

Internet security is a concern for ...

DOES YOUR WEBSITE NEED SECURITY?  by

 Krista Garren
3/20/2008 at 08:52
I recently received a pamphlet in the mail cautioning me about identity theft and reminding me that it’s always important to do whatever is necessary to protect my good name. If you receive the mountain of junk mail (that I do) which includes credit card applications you’ll know just what I’m about to talk about. Just as someone can easily raid your trash can looking for these applications (and apply for a credit card in your name), thieves also have ways of lifting your identity from websites when you shop online. When you consider how much online shopping takes place these days that’s a veritable smorgasbord for theft!

You may have heard terms like 128-bit encryption, SSL Certificate or Secure Socket Layer in terms of online protection against fraud, but what do these terms mean exactly?

Wikipedia defines an SSL (Secure Socket Layer) as... "a cryptographic protocol that provides secure communications on the Internet for such things as web browsing, e-mail, Internet faxing, instant messaging and other data transfers."

Simply put, the SSL protocol allows applications to communicate across the Internet in a way designed to prevent eavesdropping, tampering, and message forgery. This translates to safe shopping for your customers.

An SSL Certificate is an electronic passport that establishes an online entities credentials. It enables your web browser to build a secure (encrypted) connection. You’ll know if the page you are visiting is secure if you see the padlock icon in your browser’s status bar. You will also notice that the website’s address will ...

KEEPING YOUR HOME PC VIRUS-FREE  by

 John Gontowicz

There are thousands of them and more appear every day. They often take the least expected forms. They know your weak points extremely well. And they can do a lot of damage.

A brain teaser? No, a disturbing reality. We are talking about a threat that affects anyone who uses a computer - viruses.

So how can you deal with the threat? You can just hope that it does not happen to me. You can trust your luck. But, what if it does?

The second option is to have preventative ways to help minimize your PCs exposure to the computer virus threat.

The first step to make sure you’re completely virus free is to test your PC for possible infection; this is done using anti-virus software. There are factors that increase your risk to getting viruses. Some of them are:

Do you borrow floppy disks from someone?

Did someone install music or programs from their PC onto a CD-ROM?

Do you connect to the Internet?

Do you use e-mail?

Are your PCs stand-alone or connected together?

Does more than one person use your PC?

Do you use chat room software?

This past year, the following entry points were used to attack a PC with a virus:

Email: 83%

Internet downloads: 15%

Web browsing: 7%

Auto software distribution: 2%

Floppy disks, CD-ROMs - 5%

Other: 2%

The numbers overlap 100% due to multiple methods a virus can be transferred.

In order to block each virus point, one can do the following:

Anti-virus software:

* Download or purchase in a store anti-virus software. The two main companies are Symantec’s Norton ...

BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY - PROTECT YOURSELF ONLINE  by

 Stan Pontiere
3/20/2008 at 08:51
As internet marketers, we are constantly trying to improve ourselves. We subscribe to numerous lists, download Ebooks and business programs and except in very rare cases, it is usually safe to do so. I said usually, sometimes these downloads come with a little hidden surprise package and the net result could be disaster.

Unfortunately, there are unscrupulous marketers that will hide surprise packages in the form of spyware, viruses, keyloggers and other malware in what appears to be a program that you thought was intended to help you in your internet marketing campaign. You must protect yourself. While it is nice to be able to pay for the best internet protection packages, not all of us can afford to pay a small fortune for a comprehensive internet security package. There are a number of free alternatives and the ones that I am going to mention here are time proven effective programs.

Ad-Aware is no ordinary anti-spyware, it is the original anti-spyware product, offered to consumers worldwide to protect their personal and home computers from malware attacks. It is both free and effective.

You can download the program at: http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php

Many people swear by Spybot Search & Destroy but I have found that it does not interact well with certain other programs. As a result, I no longer recommend it nor do I use it. Another free download is SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 It prevents the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software. It will block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer ...

SPYWARE CAN BE AS DANGEROUS AND AS SCARY AS VIRUSES  by

 William Richardson
3/20/2008 at 08:41
The threat of spyware is quickly on the rise. In a few decades, experts project that spyware will surpass viruses as the leading cause of computer malfunctions. In fact, the intention of spyware is not to malfunction computers, but rather to steal identities. If people are not careful, they will have their unique identities stolen. Even worse, the finances that they worked so hard for would be down the drain, all thanks to spyware on the computer.

While virtually all sites that need payment information are perfectly secure, that simply does not stop the spyware from running in the background, snooping on anything and everything you do on the web. For instance, if you have a keylogger (one form of spyware) installed on your computer, it takes every single keystroke you type into any website or any program at any time and sends them to thieves for them to do damage. You could be doing your next Amazon or eBay purchases without even realizing thieves are stealing your personal information. Another form of spyware is adware. This is not only harmful but annoying as well. It is harmful in the sense that it will slow down and/or freeze your computer to unacceptable speeds. It is annoying in the sense that it will deliver you numerous amounts of pop-ups. Worse still, these pop-ups could even work around your pop-up blockers you may install into your computer.

A surefire way to prevent spyware from infecting your computer is to stay away from malicious software ...

DIRECT SECURITY MEASURE BANKING SOLUTIONS  by

 Terry Detty
3/20/2008 at 08:41
You cannot do business online if you do not trust your internet banking company. There are always unscrupulous people trying to access bank information. It is just a modern version of the old-fashioned bank robbery idea. However, these companies go to great lengths to avoid this.

Internet banking should be done only through secure connections. There are two ways to make sure you have one. One is to look near the line where you type in URL’s. If you have a secure connection, there should be a closed padlock there. Also, the web address should say https://" The "s" signifies a secure connection for your internet banking.

Encryption is the first line of defense for this type of security. Banks have 128-bit security and require you to have it on the browser you use. Encryption is basically just a formula that puts your information into a code. That code is indecipherable without a key.

Many banks use the Secured Socket Layer encryption for consumers’ internet banking transactions. This is a special form of encryption. The system will use a different master key to put each transaction into code and then that code will not be used for other transactions.

Banks also pay considerable attention to their firewalls. They want to be assured that their internet banking system is protected from attacks over the internet. So, they are not connected directly to the web. Their connection is made through a firewall which blocks unwanted activity on the server.

Special consultants are hired by internet banking companies ...

BEWARE OF ONLINE SCAMS  by

 David Strom
3/20/2008 at 08:40
I have had the dubious expertise of selling a lot of stuff via Craigslist, both here in St. Louis and also in Los Angeles. Over the past couple of years, I have come across some interesting scam artists who are fairly easy to spot. But today’s email arrived with a new exploit.

Usually, we are selling furniture. My wife is an interior decorator, and we have been through a few decorating changes. Now, when you sell a bed or some other large piece, you are not going to get too many people from out of town who are interested, unless they are moving into town. So the first tip off that something is amiss is when someone from overseas responds to the ad and says that they will pay for it sight unseen, matching your price. This violates three principles right off the bat:

* People like to negotiate prices, no matter how good a deal you are giving them. Anyone who is paying your price is suspect right there.

* People want to kick the tires and make sure that your item exists. Doesn’t matter what it is, but especially for furniture, because no photo can do any piece justice.

* Craigslist is hyper-local. Someone from out of town is suspect.

The legit customer is also going to want to think about his impending purchase, even for a few hours. And they will also pay cash, if you ask. (And you ...

I THOUGHT IT WAS AN INNOCENT DOWNLOAD!  by

 Andrew Kasch
1/15/2008 at 15:31
It all started out as a fairly normal day, even though I was getting ready to go on a great vacation. I was really excited about the trip that was about to go on and had packed about a week earlier so that I wasn’t rushed around at the end. I was just moving around the house doing some last-minute things when I decided that it would probably be a good idea if I were to back up my hard drive before I left. I really haven’t been paying as much attention to my backups as I should, so I went online to download a program to help me to move all of my files to my external hard drive. I downloaded the program and set it to transfer all of the files from my C drive over to my external. As soon as I finish transferring the files I turned my computer off and left for vacation.

A week later I returned from vacation refreshed and ready to get back to work. I turned on my computer and walked away to put some things into the laundry. When I returned to my computer I realized that it hadn’t started up at all. No matter what I tried I could not get Windows to load and that’s when I realized that the backup program I had downloaded contained a Trojan horse virus.

I don’t know how familiar you are with Trojan horse viruses, but they are small programs that are loaded in ...
