How to Take Care of Your Laptop and Make Sure It Lasts for Years

by  Marc Eagle 4/15/2011

A laptop is an expensive piece of hardware that is quite often prone to damage mainly due to the fact that owners don’t usually know how to keep it out of harm’s way. In this article I will teach you how to take care of your laptop in order to make sure you will be able to enjoy it for years.

Many of the laptop’s problems are generated by the things that make it attractive for buyers in the first place: its compact size and the fact that it’s by definition a portable device. Due to the fact that the laptop case is so small, all its internal components are stuck close together inside with little to no room around them. This generates a big problem when it comes to cooling and having a good air flow around the components. With time, heat causes irreparable damage to all the sensitive electronics inside the computer.

So, the first thing to get after buying a new laptop is a good quality cooling pad. The pad is nothing more than a slim board with a couple of fans in it that sits underneath the laptop. I suggest you buy a cooling pad that draws its power from the laptop itself via a USB port. This ensures that your laptop will remain a portable machine and not become dependent on a plug for the cooling pad.

Dust and minute sand particles are a real danger for your laptop. Dust is sucked into the casing by the coolers ...

iPads, Android and the Rest of the World

by  Mark J Laverty 4/15/2011

A truly tectonic shift in how we use computers is happening right now, and I’ll bet it’s happening within 30 feet of where you are while you read this.

What is this shift? Powerful, portable, user-friendly mobile computing in the form of a touch screen tablet PC. You can bet that no matter where you are in a developed county you’ll be no more than 30 feet away from someone with a touch screen device of some description.

And what’s more, given the recent advances in hardware and software, those people may actually be able to use their devices for something useful!

You see, it’s all about the power.. well ’power consumption’ to be more exact

Early attempts at true mobile touch screen computing were rather lack lustre. The Windows Operating system was used almost exclusively, and whilst touch screen support was added to later versions there were two MAJOR problems.

1) The Windows desktop OS was a huge power-hungry monster... ok so maybe that is a little harsh. But the truth of the matter was that when you combined the Windows OS with the X86 platform it is tied too, you could not produce a thin, light and powerful device that could:

a. Provide decent video playback, let alone play HD video.
b. Play any kind of proper 3D game.

This meant that most early attempts were either heavy, chunky hot slabs of processing power, or they were completely under powered and almost unusable.

2) Windows was never designed from the start as a touch screen OS for ...

Pros and Cons in the Battles of iPhone With the Android

by  Benjiman Kelly 2/8/2011

They came out with the 2.3 version of their Android operating system, interestingly called the gingerbread. Rest mobile operating systems seem to have been abandoned by the public, like once very popular the symbian operating system developed primarily by Nokia seems to have lost the game. On the other hand the Microsoft’s windows mobile platform is counting its days to the end. Rest all seems to have been wiped out in the competition.

The arrival of all the new players with all new designs and plans, seem to take the market by storm, and we will have to evaluate that how are they doing in the year 2011. Primarily we are seeing only two major players on the scene, the Apple’s iOS (found only in the iPhone, iPods and iPads.) and the Google’s Android (found in many phones in the market, primarily because its open source and easily implemented)

Cracks in the iOS

Undoubtedly the iOS in the iPhone and other Apple mobile devices have ruled the market, even when the first version with so many bugs and flaws were launched, still it was the favorite amongst the users, some people bought as a style statement, some as loyalty towards Apple, and some found the design too interesting. Still the flaws are as follows:

Inflexibility in the software: the iOS by default does not allow you to tweak or customize the user interface; it’s only possible by hacking of the OS, called Jailbreak.

The devices are not productive: they are good for those who are ...

Data at Risk: Mobile Computing, Apps and User Data

by  Chris A Inskeep 2/8/2011

Mobile computing is a paradigm shift away from personal computers and their infrastructure toward very large flexible networks of loosely connected platforms. It has new platforms, operating systems, applications (apps) and exciting new approaches to old problems. As the paradigm shift gains momentum, the application of the technology expands to include areas never considered when the technology was designed. Risk mitigation requirements tend to be glossed over as the devices’ ease of use, affordability, and accessibility compels use. Users are often naive regarding the risks to their information, enjoying the benefits of use without giving a lot of thought to potential dangers.

Mobile devices that do not require users to be identified and authenticated are said to have anonymous users. Anonymity is an issue because it is impossible to impose accountability for user actions or mediate access to resources based on prior granted access. In effect all of the mobile devices’ assets are available to any anonymous user solely based on physical access to the device. Availability is important as the applications supported by mobile devices expand to include electronic commerce transactions and manage privacy-related data. The transparency of apps is an issue, apps that store sensitive information have been found that store the information in intermediary files that are shared with third parties without the knowledge or consent of the user originating the information.

Computing technology paradigm shifts have tended to ignore issues that would complicate or slow their acceptance, information security is a case in point. The shift to client ...

WiFi - Optimize Your Wireless Network in Five Simple Steps

by  Glenn Chagnot 2/8/2011

Anybody who has tried to deploy a wireless router has run into the issue of wondering if the network really will work everywhere it is intended. Wireless networks are significantly more complicated to set up than a wired Ethernet network for the following four reasons:

* Wireless network obviously have no wires making it difficult to determine where devices, such as laptops, are connected
* Neighboring networks do not stop at the wall boundary between your properties
* There are a plethora of configuration options for WiFi that most people don’t understand
* The WiFi design of the end devices (laptops, iPhones, etc.) have a huge impact on the overall performance

Setting up a wireless network has basically been a trial and error affair. You set up the network, walk around with your laptop, look at the number of bars in the display, and try to download a few web pages to see if the network works. The problem with this approach is that you never really know if you just got your network going "good enough" or if you really achieved the best performance and robustness possible.

Recently, a new, totally free product named WaveDeploy has become available that will allow you to know that you are getting the most out of your network. WaveDeploy allows you to actually see your network’s performance on a map of your house. It also helps you see where your neighbors’ networks are ...

Getting The Most From Your Laptops And Mobile Devices

by  Brian Lakeman 2/8/2011

Many people realize very quickly that their laptop or mobile device can connect to an internet connection available and are based on this free internet as a way to get a signal wherever they go. Of course, in theory, this works fine but there are many areas where the signal of wireless Internet access is not available and when you’re trying to get the job done while traveling or to keep in touch with family and friends who will probably find this method of collecting free internet access unreliable.

A wireless internet card is a device that you plug into the USB port of your laptop and use to access a wireless internet connection through a specific provider. Although, you must pay for this service it is much more reliable then relying on free internet access when you are traveling. After all, in a hotel room or McDonalds you are guaranteed to get internet access but if you are in the parking lot at the ball field waiting for little league practice to end you may not be so lucky.

Most cable companies and mobile phone cards offer wireless Internet access for one low monthly fee and if you are a person who relies on their internet connection a lot when they’re on the road, then you will definitely want to invest in this unit. It can also ensure a connection even when you’re near a big city or town and in most places where you have a high speed broadband. In ...

Aspects of Mobile Software and Web Application Development

by  Alan L Smith 11/20/2010

Some of the prominent applications that the mobile phones are enabled to perform are email, web browsing, games, faxing, and accessing wireless information services.

Most of the mobile applications are centered on mobile website development, mobile games development, and mobile applications development. These developments are usually programmed in in.Net and Java.

Some of vital elements to be considered for Development are as follows:

What the customer wants?

When the mobile application is to be developed, the manufacturer or designer needs to consider the preferences of the customer. Some of the mobiles are targeted for business men. These kinds of mobiles should be having applications that suit the requirement of the business men. If the mobile is for the youth it should have games that are quite attractive with images and colors.

Type of platform:

There are different types of platforms. The most common platforms are Windows mobile, Blackberry, Android and iPhone. The mobile or cell phone applications are platform sensitive. The application that works on one platform will most probably not work on the other platform. This is because the technology of the platforms differs. Thus the development has to done with the platform into consideration.

Acer Aspire AS5251

by  Adil Iqbal Cheema 11/20/2010

People these days look for their comfort level in using computers. And most comfortable thing that has come in the form of personal computer is a laptop. These days there are many companies making some great and affordable laptops, Acer is one of them. Acer is known for his performance and unbeatable prices.

Recently Acer introduced its new laptop Acer Aspire AS5251. This laptop is very low price as compared to others of its league. But it is said that companies make compromises over performance or other things in order to lower their price. So we will find out in this discussion that whether Acer has made compromises or it’s giving best quality in low price.

When you first get this laptop you feel that its shape is reasonably well crafted. It’s much similar to ASUS UL80VT-A1. Which if you have used is the best laptop available in the market in its price. So at first impression you will like to know that whether its performance is also like ASUS? Well lets analyze its performance.

First thing that can judge performance is processor. Acer is giving a 2.20 GHZ AMD processor which is series V120 and is single core. People usually like to see Intel processors but these days people have understood that every company deals with some specific range of products and every one cannot give you an Intel’s processor. This AMD processor that Acer has used deals really well with video streaming. Normally these days laptops come with dual core but ...

How To Choose A Netbook Computer

by  Andrew R Johnson 11/20/2010

A netbook computer is, essentially, a smaller version of a laptop. It is also less powerful than its slightly larger counterpart. However, this does not mean that it isn’t ideal for certain functions. If you need to surf the Internet, use your word processor, or send off an e-mail, then it can be just as useful. There are plenty of different brands that you can choose from and lots of different places where you could purchase your netbook. Here are several things that you should be considering when making your choice of what to buy.

It is a good idea to consider the keyboard and therefore you may want to go into a local computer store and have a go at several different varieties. While this isn’t a problem with a laptop, a netbook computer is a lot smaller and therefore it may be tricky to get a hang of the smaller spacings between the keys. Some netbooks can be very awkward to operate and therefore this is an important consideration.

Always make sure that you choose a fast processor. Almost every single one that you find on the market will be using the Intel Atom processor and this is certainly going to be sufficient.

At the same time you should make sure that it has a highly regarded operating system. Again, most will have something like Windows Vista and this will be fine.

The battery is something that you should consider very closely. Are you going to be using the PC a way ...

Upgrade Your Laptop

by  Peter Paul Simpson 11/20/2010

Upgrading your laptop is a very simple and easy process that the average consumer tends to overlook. It is hassle free and is definitely worth your time and effort. The process is nearly the same for almost any products currently, whether you have an Apple Mac, Macbook Pro, Toshiba laptop, or even a Sony Vaio. When upgrading your computer the areas that tend to drastically affect your performance are the RAM, battery, and hard drive. Don’t know what those do? Well I’ll tell you.

The RAM is a form of storage for your computer. It is one of the most important components inside your computer. RAM is essentially what your computer uses to recall data in real time. To simplify this, imagine a car engine. The more horsepower the engine has the faster speed it can achieve and the more it can pull. So essentially the more RAM you have the better your Apple Mac, Macbook Pro, Toshiba laptop, or a Sony Vaio will run.

The battery of your computer is another essential thing that your mobile computer will use. Depending on your battery, the longer your mobile computer will last without charging. How long your battery lasts depends on several factors. The most important thing when looking for a new battery is what your current system specs are. The higher your mobile computer’s are the bigger drain it will impose on your battery’s life. These drains include watching videos/movies, playing games, and keeping your computer at maximum brightness. If you plan ...
