Jet Ski Safety Tips

by  Karen Whitehurst 5/13/2012

Summertime at the lake can be a great time for family and friends to relax, have fun, and experience some high-speed thrills riding jet skis. These watercraft can provide a very enjoyable leisure activity to pass the days on the water, but they can also be very dangerous and even deadly if operated recklessly or without proper precautions. And while jet skis are much smaller than boats and other watercraft, they need to be treated with care to ensure the safety of riders and other individuals in the water.

Jet ski accidents can happen at any time with any and all levels of rider experience. Some common causes of accidents on personal watercraft include:

•Excessive speed
•Operating while intoxicated
•Not paying attention to other people or other watercraft
•Not allowing enough space between you and other riders
•Miscommunication

Most serious watercraft accidents can be avoided if operators act with care and responsibility. Drivers should always know their limits and never drive faster than he or she is comfortable with. You can be safer on a jet ski with some basic safety tips, including:

•Wear a life vest
•Never drink alcohol and operate a personal watercraft
•Communicate your turns with other drivers using hand signals
•Go slow in "no wake" zones near the shore and swimmers
•Take riding lessons and a watercraft safety course

Accidents do happen, but being aware and following these steps can greatly reduce your chance of being injured. If another person’s reckless behavior causes you or someone you ...

Tips For Buying A Jet Ski

by  John Blowers 5/13/2012

One of the most fun activities to enjoy in the summer is going out and riding on a jet ski. Personal watercrafts are easy to rent, but people who use them regularly may benefit from purchasing one of their own. There are many different models available and it is important to do some careful thinking before going out and buying one.

The first thing a shopper must decide before purchasing a jet ski is what size they think they will need. Jet skis come in sizes that can accommodate anywhere from one to four riders. If an entire family wants to enjoy the jet ski, it may be easier to simply buy a bigger model that can seat everyone at the same time.

For the safety of everyone who will use the jet ski, it is necessary to put thought into what kind of horsepower the craft should have. A low speed watercraft is a much safer option if children are going to be allowed to use it. However, if an adult will be driving and towing a tube or wakeboard, they will want something with a more powerful engine.

When it comes to the extra features that are available, there are quite a few from which to choose. To avoid spending a fortune, it is important for shoppers to plan in advance which features they need and which they could do without. This will help them to narrow down their choices and to stay within their budget.

How to Restore a Jet Ski

by  Chet Val 5/13/2012

The restoration of a older model jet ski can be a rewarding experience upon completion. If you’ve lived by the water for the better part of your life, you should be at least remotely familiar with jet skis, maybe even intimately familiar. This read is for those personal watercraft enthusiasts who may wish to restore a jet ski. The phrase "how to restore a jet ski" is not necessarily a how to rebuild carbs or pumps, but how to approach a restoration project from day one. First of all it is important to consider that the people who can best afford to restore a jet ski, usually don’t. Those who can’t afford restoration projects are usually the ones that desire and ultimately attempt them. Many times, these projects usually come undone because the owner failed to anticipate the cost properly. Fixer upper jet skis are rarely good deals. Money is a very important aspect in these projects.

If you haven’t got cash, then it’s likely a mistake to think that you can perform a complete restoration. Looking at it from another point of view however, taking a well designed, well built, older jet ski and restoring it can be the most cost effective way to get yourself onto a good quality jet ski that you would not otherwise be able to afford. Older models tend to have less bells and whistles but when you’re cruising across the water with a breeze in your hair, does that really matter? Regarding your ...

Purchasing Your First Jet Ski And What You Need To Know Before You Do

by  Jeffrey Ferris 5/13/2012

How many times have you been out at the lake or ocean and seen numerous people whizzing about on jet skis having the time of their life, wishing you were out there with them? They are very fast and maneuverable, and there is always plenty of splash action to keep you cool on a hot day! They are probably the number one serious rental toy at the beach at most resorts around the world, and for a good reason. They’re fun to drive!

There are many different types and models of jet skis (also called waverunners), and I’m going to run through a few of them. I’ve personally had a Sea-Doo GTX for several years and I may be somewhat biased, but I consider them to be the best and most popular selling brand. The company definitely knows how to market, and they have a lion’s share of the sales today. Sea-Doo has been around for quite a while and they’ve got a great reputation in the industry for ease of use and that they are also extremely easy to take care of and maintain. Any problems associated with Sea-Doo’s are often relatively minor, and can be usually inexpensive to fix. Of course, with any big piece of machinery there are always exceptions, and you’ll want to treat it as nicely as you can in order for you to keep enjoying the benefits of being out on the water for years to come. Seriously, I’ve seen people go out and ...

Finding Jet Skis For Sale With The Use Of The Net

by  Kim Elfondo 5/13/2012

When looking for jet skis for sale individuals tend to lock on to several areas to start looking. That’s like deciding to get a residence and working with only one estate agent to find them, or deciding simply to wander round the streets looking for ’For Sale’ signs in the gardens. Or gonna the nearest garage or parking good deal to choose out a car or truck that you simply may like and try and acquire it from your proprietor.

"Insanity!" Nobody buys a property or possibly an automobile like that, so you would most likely be quite proper. So why do so quite a few individuals search out jet skis for sale by wandering throughout the beaches and boatyards they know, looking for anything that fits them? Why stick to the destinations their mates know or that one saleroom simply because it is spherical the corner. "Got to have my boat or jet ski there since the guy is aware of me" sort of point.

What’s incorrect with trying to find jet skis on the internet? If you will be looking for a jet ski for sale, you then might have some concept about what you desire to buy - the make, the electrical power, the looks or even the dimension or variety of seats. Or maybe it isn’t. If you don’t, who’s gonna aid you? Will you simply obtain from some random person since he has jet skis for sale? Are you gonna turn into the prey of ...

The Joys of Owning a Jet Ski

by  Paul Abbey 9/29/2010

Everyone has seen someone out on the water riding a jet ski. They look like a lot of fun, out there flying over the waves. It’s like surfing, without the risk of getting dumped off of your board. It’s like flying, right over the water. And, you are the one in control of it. What could be better, or more exciting. No wonder everyone wants to do it.

But, before you go out and buy your very own jet ski, there are some things that you need know and consider. Jet skis vary in price and size and in what features they offer. You will need to figure out how much you are able to afford, and what features will fit into that price range. Some jet skis are made for just one person, others will fit 2 people, the driver and a rider. Some have bigger engines and are heavier, more suited in fighting the waves on the ocean, whereas the lighter ones are great for lakes and rivers. So, you will need to decide where you are planning on riding your personal water craft. If you want to ride primarily on the ocean, but sometimes on rivers or lakes, it is still worth buying the larger craft.

Once you have bought your jet ski, but before you get on it, you should review safety procedures. You want to make sure that you are safe while you are out having fun, and that you can maintain the safety of other while ...

Exercise With Your Jet-Ski

by  Daniel Summerill 9/29/2010

Anyone who’s tried racing their jet ski around a circuit will know that it’s an excellent full body workout. Throwing your 600lb machine around the waves while trying to maintain balance and keep a tight line is hard work so it comes as no shock that jet-skiers often have extremely toned bodies.

If you were to watch a professional jet ski racer push his ski to the limits, it requires plenty of balance and a lot of strength to force the jet ski in the direction he needs it to go at such an incredible pace.

I’ve trained with footballers, rugby players, runners and swimmers. Despite not sharing the same sport we all had similar levels of fitness and health. It comes as no shock but to be able to compete in jet ski racing it requires a healthy body first and foremost. You simply couldn’t compete otherwise.

The jet ski industry has yet to realize this but the motocross industry has, and their industry offers many courses that offer motocross training with racing in mind or just general fitness. The jet ski and motocross industries are very similar so why is there no one offering such a course?

Regular jet-skiing especially on the sea, is a great work out for your arms, legs and upper body strength. You can use your jet ski in a multitude of different ways depending on what section of your body you plan to train.

More people need to realize that there are other ways to exercise. Getting healthy doesn’t ...

Personal Watercraft - AKA Jet Skis

by  Dale McIntosh 9/29/2010

Personal watercraft, also known by the more familiar name of jet ski, have become an extremely popular water sport vehicle for use on lakes and waterways. They are a great source of recreation on the water and have become an alternate method of towing wake boarders, water skiers and inner tubers.

The name jet ski derives from the fact they are propelled by a high speed jet of water shooting out the back of the craft and that the early models required the rider to stand up and hold on to a steering mechanism. The jet skis ability to carve sharp turns and jump wakes reminds of skiing thus the name jet ski. These models are hard to ride and require a certain amount of athletic ability of the rider. Because of this they soon gave way to the today’s models that the rider sits on similar to the way a motorcycle is ridden.

The jet ski is propelled by a water-jet pump which draws water in through an underwater grate and shoots it out the rear of the craft under high pressure pushing the craft through the water. The water-jet pump is generally driven by a two cylinder gasoline engine.

The jet ski, in reality, is a full-fledged boat. The operator of a jet ski has the same responsibilities as the operator of any other boat and must adhere to many of the same rules and regulations of larger boats. Because of their unique operating characteristics some states have a separate set ...

The Jet Ski Versus the Boat - Is There a Winner?

by  Chet Val 9/29/2010

Time to open the wallet and purchase a watercraft for some summer pleasure on the pond, lake, or ocean. The decision to buy some form of watercraft has been made but the decision of the exact make, model, and type has yet to be determined. By type of watercraft I mean boat or jet ski... Jet ski is actually a trademarked term for the Kawasaki personal watercraft. Personal watercraft (or PWC for short) of any brand have been called jet skis for years. The model name stuck to PWC’s the same way the word band-aid is used in reference to virtually any bandage. By habit, I too refer to all PWC machines as jet skis. But back to the issue at hand. Purchasing one particular type of watercraft for summertime pleasure can be a tough choice. I’ve personally both a personal watercraft and an open-bow power boat. Let’s explore the differences, the benefits, and disadvantages of each. These two types of watercraft have many differences that may affect your final decision.

Boats, first of all come in many sizes and shapes and they can be priced for many budgets. In all fairness, we will use an eighteen foot bowrider as the boat of comparison since base models can be priced in the ballpark of higher end jet skis. The boat differs form the jet ski in its size first of all. This is an advantage if you are looking for room to move aboard the craft. This is also an advantage ...

The Fun of Jet Ski Powersports

by  Melissa Kelly 9/29/2010

Jet Ski Powersports is a thriving way to bring another level of enjoyment and excitement to jet ski enthusiasts. Many opportunities exist for riders to participate in great events.

The International Jet Sports Boating Association (ISJBA) has many competitions for both amateurs and pros. Also, many local jet ski clubs and organizations host jet ski powersports events. The ISJBA has a Competition Rulebook that explains the rules for particular events along with the qualifications for entry. Local events are an excellent way to get your start in jet ski powersports.

Once you have entered local events and gotten some experience and wins under your belt, you could try to compete in the National Championships. Beyond the National Championships, you can participate in the World Finals held in Lake Havasu City, Arizona in October each year.

Here is a listing of the types of events in which you can participate:

  • Closed Course - In this event, several racers go around multiple laps completing approximately 1/2 mile.
  • Drag Racing - Here racers go head-to-head over a course of approximately 1/8 mile long.
  • Endurance/Offshore - In these races, competitors race over long distances.
  • Freestyle - This competition can be fun to watch with competitors riding for two minutes showing off their complicated and creative tricks and skills.
  • Slalom - On this race course, each competitor makes zig-zag left and right turns around markers.
  • Indoor and Special Events - These are other available events with specialized rules.

Safety is of the utmost concern and if you want to make sure you are prepared, you ...

Jet Ski Engine Maintenance Tips

by  Low Jeremy 9/29/2010

Jet skis are personal watercrafts that will sure leave you hurling for more in open waters. However, to be able to make the most out from them (besides their tag prices are so high that you must really get the deal from your precious vehicle), you have to know what keeps it in good working condition.

Other jet ski parts aside, jet ski engines are probably the most important part of the whole machine. It drives the watercraft, it gives the power. Depending on the condition, they provide the performance and create the envying waves. Well, in fact jet ski engines are the ones that will keep the machine running.

In fact, when your buying for a jet ski especially those that are sold second hand, the looks won’t say it all. It is always the engine that would spell the difference. In fact, the more the scratches while the engine is working on its optimum power, the better the deal. The engine therefore, gives the life for the vehicle.

The whole PWC is useless when it’s not working right? Well, maintenance for your jet ski engine does not entail demanding routines. As a sample, it would be good to note that the engine, for it to work properly must always be supplied with enough oil. (that isn’t hard right?)

Oil provides the lubrication. This is vital since once the jet ski engine lacks oil, fusing of parts would be possible.

Another thing, flush water from your engine regularly. Lake water may do but algae ...

Background You Must Know Before You Buy a Jet Ski

by  Low Jeremy 9/29/2010

Brief History
Invented by Clayton Jacobsen II, Jet Skis are the first of its kind. Kawasaki became the pioneer in the industry and they were the first to release and mass produce the vehicle. Later during the developmental stages, Kawasaki released the model JS-400 with 400cc two-stroke engines. This event then lead to the eventual success and recognition of the new vehicle in the sports world.

Description
Depending on the model, a jet ski can accommodate one to four people. Initially developed as a personal watercraft, jet ski has now evolved into a sports and transportation vehicle.

The one-person model initialized its popularity which later caused manufactures to mass produce similar watercrafts to cater the growing market.

Originally, the design was meant for crouching and standing on a platform roughly located at the rear of the equipment. However, innovation caused newer models to provide the flexibility of varying positions through the use of engineered designs. Add to it the steering column that allows vertical and horizontal movements. All these added to the rider’s freedom of movement and whenever necessary, wave actions.

The jet propulsion system, being the main reason why jet skis are called was the most innovative addition to personal watercrafts. This happens when the water is driven into a tube attached in the craft and is then ejected in the rear, thus the jet effect.

This same tube in jet skis is also capable of moving horizontally from side to side, which helps a great deal during steering actions.

The power system of jet ski, being ...
