SIMPLE IMPROVEMENTS TO YOUR PROPERTY  by

 Keith Barrett
10/5/2008 at 19:51
We all like to make the most of our homes but sometimes it feels like we’re restricted by the amount of money that we have available to us. If you feel that way then don’t despair - our top tips on simple improvements to your property can help.

In this article we’re looking at simple changes that you can make that will really improve the state of your home. In particular, we’re looking for improvements that will make you proud to live in your home, while also adding to the overall value of the property.

We’re well aware that most people are working with a restricted budget so we’re concentrating on changes that won’t cost a massive amount of money. Let’s take a walk through a typical home and see what improvements could be made.

We start outside the property - this is an area that many people overlook. In reality, having the exterior of your property looking good can make a real difference. Fortunately, improvements in this area are often cheap too.

Take a look at the outside of your home and think about whether a quick lick of paint could improve the state of any woodwork and of your front door. Such changes are cheap and simple to carry out but can make a real difference to your property.

Don’t forget the garden too. A well kept garden can be a real highlight and can create an enjoyable space. Think about how your garden looks - is it an appeal place in which ...

COST EFFECTIVE HOME IMPROVEMENTS  by

 Keith Barrett
10/5/2008 at 19:50
Many people make the mistake of assuming that home improvements will be cost effective because they will add value to their homes when they come to sell them. Unfortunately this is often not the case.

Thousands spend on a new conservatory, for example, may well end up being wasted if the cost of the conservatory is not even covered by any increase in the value of the property. The most famous, or possibly infamous, example of this is when people install swimming pools in their home or garden.

It may seem like a good idea and one which sure to add value to the home, but it’s unlikely to be a cost effective solution. In reality, it can actually have the opposite effect.

Many potential buyers with young children would actually be put off buying a property if it included a pool. This is because of considerations surrounding the safety aspects of having young kids around such a hazard.

Others may also be put off, mainly due to the maintenance costs that are involved.

So what sort of home improvements do represent value for money? You need to think about what potential buyers are likely to be attracted to. A new look bathroom or kitchen may well be selling points, so those are two rooms of the house that you could look at.

Consider how much they might increase the value of your home by. Don’t simply have a guess - do some research and closely examine property prices in the area where you live.

The golden ...

INCREASING THE VALUE OF YOUR OWN HOME  by

 Keith Barrett
10/5/2008 at 19:49
With the future of housing markets all around the world looking uncertain, many people are deciding against moving homes at this point in time. Instead, it seems like there has been a surge in the number of people carrying out home improvements.

If done well, home improvements can certainly add to the value of your home. Equally, if you make a mess of things then your DIY skills could lead to a decrease in the value of your home.

The key to increasing the value of your property is to take on tasks that will add to the quality of your home. Think about the type of improvements that potential buyers might like to see.

Also consider your own skills. If you’re not a DIY expert then you don’t want to try making changes that could go horribly wrong. It may be that you need to get expert help with some jobs, but think about whether the work will be cost effective.

So let’s take a closer look at the changes that you could make to your home. Firstly, take a look at the outside of the property. It may seem like a strange place to start but any potential buyers will see the exterior of the building before they step inside.

Think about how it looks and the type of impression that it creates. There are some simple tasks that can be carried out inexpensively but which really can improve the appearance of any house. You might, for instance, consider painting any woodwork and ...

KITCHEN TOOLS - EQUIPPING YOUR WORKBENCH  by

 Pamela Ferris
1/13/2008 at 14:35
Kitchen tools are so important to the preparation of a meal, and yet so few people really grant them the status they deserve. If you think about it, the tools you use are often-times more important than the quality of the ingredients. You might have the most amazing fresh apples, Aunt DeeDee’s hand-made pie crust, and imported cinnamon and sugar. But if your knife is dull, your plastic mixing bowl is holding on to odors from last week’s salsa, or maybe your pie pan isn’t deep enough (or made of metal - we’ll talk!), you might turn all those stellar ingredients into a less than stellar pie. Tragic, right?

On the other hand, if you have store-bought, refrigerated crust, apples from a can, a little caramel ice cream topping from a jar and some walnuts left over from Thanksgiving, I can make you an Upside-Down Caramel Apple Pie for which your folks will be BEGGING next holiday! The secret? I have the right tools!!

The tools you keep in your kitchen should match the way you cook MOST OFTEN. We all have specialty items that are pulled out during the holidays, and those are fabulous. But there are some staples that one should have around, just the way you keep certain staples in your pantry . . . flour, sugar, rice, salt, Double Strength Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Extract. Okay, maybe that last one is just me, but it SHOULD be you, too! You deserve to have the best tools at your ...

Quick Ways to Update your Counters

Painting is one way, but it is often not the most efficient way to breath new life into your kitchen. If you cannot afford to replace old and worn counters, then you may want to think about counter resurfacing. There are many companies out there that can fit your existing counters with a new look. If your counters are made of wood or Formica, then resurfacing works best. Tile is harder to resurface, but it can be done. Wood or butcher block counters are also ideal for resurfacing.

Picking Out New Kitchen Counters

As you begin looking at your kitchen counter project, you may determine that resurfacing is not an option. In that case, ...

KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN KITCHEN RENOVATION AND REDECORATING  by

 Jerry A. Blackburn
1/13/2008 at 14:29
The very word "renovate" may send chills down many homeowners’ backs. Renovating any part of the house means a lot of time, lots of patience and a large wallet, too. Not to mention that if you have to hire a general contractor, then renovating any room in your house also means that you will have to live with strangers in and out of your home. A kitchen renovation is a big job and the best way to get it done correctly is to plan it out in careful and precise stages and steps. You need to know where you are headed with the project before you ever begin and you need to have ideas about how much you will end up spending on the project.

Plan in advance before you start your project:

The first step in planning your kitchen renovation is to plan. It is recommended that you take some time to pinpoint precisely what it is that you what to change and why. If you simply say that you want to change your kitchen, it could be a lot of things. Do you dislike your appliances? Do you need more storage space? Perhaps you just want to redecorate. If you live in a small house, it could mean all of the above. When you know exactly what you want to do, you will find that your project will go more smoothly.

There is certainly a big difference in a kitchen renovation and redecorating, although you may end up doing both. However, ...

FUN REMODELING IDEAS FOR KITCHEN  by

 Christine Julianne
1/13/2008 at 14:28
Are you thinking about looking into some remodeling ideas for kitchens? There are two important things to keep in mind: Your own personal space, and the size of the area you’ll be remodeling. There must be a happy compromise between the two!

If installing a kitchen island means it would be impossible to walk around or even enter your kitchen, it doesn’t do any good to dream about it.

So, have the size of the kitchen in mind when you’re searching for what you want to put in there. Every kitchen, no matter its size, can be redesigned in literally unlimited ways.

Changing the cabinetry will probably result in the most dramatic visual change in the kitchen. You have lots of options. You could always stain or repaint them, or hire a company to refront them. Of course, you could always just tear them out and start from scratch.

Whatever it is you desire, your choice will no doubt be heavily influenced by your budget allowances. Another easy way to freshen up your kitchen and update its look is to buy all new appliances.

The biggest trend over the past few years has been stainless steel. When it comes to kitchen remodels, replacing the oven, refrigerator, microwave, dishwasher, and range are a must.

Remodeling ideas for kitchens would not be complete without talking about countertops and floors. Since you want both the materials and the colors to complement each other, you should consider countertops and floors at the same time.

There are a wide variety of choices ...

BUILDING KITCHEN CABINETS IS A DO-IT-YOUR-SELFER’S DREAM  by

 Betty Hope
1/13/2008 at 14:25
Building kitchen cabinets is one of the do-it-your-selfer’s dreams come true. If you know what you are doing, they can be easy to build and rewarding when you are finished. The large hardware stores have kitchen cabinets from kits that you just pop together and either nail or glue in place, sometimes both, before attaching them to the walls. Or you could start from scratch in building kitchen cabinets and draw your own plans, get the lumber, cut it, sand it, then nail the pieces together and then paint or stain it. It all depends on your comfort level and how skilled you are before you can be off doing it.

If you are not interested in building kitchen cabinets you might be interested in purchasing pre-built or designer cabinets. One such designer cabinet you might be interested in are Merillat cabinets, which began in 1946. Today, Merillat is a leader in kitchen cabinets. Featuring three distinct designs to choose from, totaling over 50 patterns and styles, there is the Merillat Essentials, Merillat Classics and Merillat Masterpiece. Each having their own price ranges and distinctive designs to fit into any kitchen, Merillat is part of the American tradition of kitchen cabinets.

Another type of kitchen cabinet that is a great alternative to building kitchen cabinets is the Kemper cabinet, which was founded in 1926 by brothers George E. and Paul W. and their friend, Ray L. Headington in Richmond, Indiana. In 1998, Kemper was purchased by MasterBrand, retaining the name Kemper, and ...

HOW A SIMPLE KITCHEN COUNTER TOP RENOVATION DOES WONDERS TO A HOME  by

 Ray Lam
1/13/2008 at 14:25
The fastest and most efficient way to make a kitchen look better is through a kitchen counter top renovation. Once you resurface the kitchen counter top, your kitchen will get a completely new appearance and it will make an otherwise dull space into a bright new area. Since the kitchen is the most used room in any house, the condition of it can set the general tone for the home. A nice looking kitchen can provide a conducive area for the family can ease tensions and also provide an adequate workspace.

Most of the old style counter tops are made from plywood together with a layer of Formica glued to the top. The toughest part of the renovation process is removing the surface veneer. It is a time consuming process and often leaves gouges in the underside of the wood. If you want an easier way out, you remove the old kitchen counter top and replace it with a brand new one. Counter tops are easily found and they come in wide array of styles, colors and shapes to suit most kitchens. You also can order a custom made top to suit any existing kitchen cabinets. However, do be prepared to fork you extra money for a customized counter top as they can be quite expensive.

If you are a DIY person, you can consider renovating your own kitchen counter top. It is quite easy to do and does not require much construction knowledge. The first step would be to draw a ...
