COLLECTING BOOKS - DETERMINING RARE BOOK VALUES  by

 Emmanuel Manetakis
10/5/2008 at 19:44
Whenever the topic of collectible books comes up in discussion, one of the first questions asked is, "How do you determine a book’s value?" The answer is simpler than you might think: the value of a book is exactly what people are willing to buy it for. Collectible book prices are dependent on far too many things to be pinned down as firmly as, say, a barrel of oil or a company’s stock.

As with all collectibles, demand influences the price of a rare book more than anything else. Since the market is unregulated, you’re free to slap any price tag you want on your collectible books. That doesn’t necessarily mean that someone will be willing to pay that price, though-you won’t know that until you actually make the sale.

What do we mean by this? Take, for example, a collectible bookseller cruising his annual neighborhood garage sale. He finds a box of books at one of his neighbor’s tables and, after a quick review, decides that the books, on average, are worth $3 apiece. Since there are 25 books in the box, he offers his neighbor $75. The neighbor had no price tags on the books but would have been willing to sell them for $.50 apiece, had the buyer bothered to ask, so the neighbor is quite happy. The buyer is happier than he’d expected to be, too; upon closer review of the books, he realizes that one is a rare first edition autobiography. He’s not sure what the book’s ...

MINIATURE PORCELAIN DOLL KITS  by

 Wendy Pan
10/5/2008 at 19:43
At one time it was quite the thing for all little girls to have miniature porcelain dolls. Many of them were dressed in the national dress of the country concerned and were brought back as holiday gifts in the early years of the package holiday. It was not uncommon to find a friend with a shelf displaying Spanish dolls in bright spotted dresses and mantilla’s and German girls with dirndl skirts and embroidered blouses. Occasionally there was even Japanese or some other exotic doll but that was usually only if one had a wealthy traveling relative or perhaps a brother or father in the services. These were collected and displayed but were only to be played with rarely and carefully not ever used for the girlish flights of fancy and play scenarios inflicted on their humble plastic cousins. So could this be the foundation for a love of miniature porcelain doll kits? It is not really surprising that the experience of treasuring these prized exotic and colorful little people may have led some to a yen in later life to create for themselves a miniature porcelain figure that inspired their early admiration.

Collecting and assembling miniature porcelain doll kits is a flourishing craft scene. Internet sites giving information on these miniature porcelain doll kits are not hard to find and the variety of dolls that can be made is quite bewildering. Miniature porcelain doll kits can be found which include make up instructions and historical information to recreate some of the ...

MAKE YOUR OWN ARTWORK IN GLASS  by

 Peter Wakefield
10/5/2008 at 19:42
People all over the world are taking up new and different hobbies each and every day. One which intrigues me is glass blowing and finding out about how to blow glass.

Glass blowing is not your everyday hobby or pastime but one which will fill you with joy when you produce something magical and requires great skill and dedication as well as hot, hard work and a good set of lungs. Having said that, you can start small with blowing items like beads for example before moving onto larger and more decorative items. I’ll also bet that you will keep the first few items you make as a reminder as to how far you have come as you get to a more advanced stage.

Taking up glass blowing as a hobby probably won’t be the first thing to spring to mind when thinking of a pastime to immerse yourself in, but once you start and you see a continual improvement in your efforts, as you can if you follow a step by step guide on how to blow glass, you will have a lifetime of pleasure from it.

Glass blowing is a skill which has been around for hundreds and hundreds of years and can take a lifetime to master, so how do you go about learning how to blow glass in a relatively short space of time so you can take it up as a hobby and start to make your own pieces?

There are many resources available these days and you don’t ...

BEAUTIFUL WAX SCULPTURES MADE EASY  by

 Sirena Van Schaik
10/5/2008 at 19:42
There is something infinitely beautiful about a well shaped candle. People will pay top dollar for this works of art and I have often found that many people will avoid using them since they are so exquisite.

If you do use the sculpted candle, you are left with a melted mess, trying to figure out exactly what to do with it now. Sure you can melt it down to make more candles but why don’t you melt it down to create another sculpture.

I am not a big fan of abstract art but I have come to really enjoy these wax sculptures. They are easy to make and you can make them with older children, under supervision. Actually, the first time I made an abstract wax sculpture, I was only 13.

They are very easy to make and you only need a few items to create a beautiful work of art. You don’t even need candles!

What you need:

• Wax - This is the most important item for making a wax sculpture but I have used everything from store bought wax to old crayons. Remember that some colors will mix together creating a muddy color but others won’t.

• Double Boiler - Since you are melting wax, it is best to use a double boiler or a metal bowl in a few inches of water. Adding a pot of wax to a direct source of heat can cause fires or at the very least, may burn the wax and ruin the pot.

• Colored Dye - ...

HOW TO BE A POTTERY ARTIST  by

 Alice Lane
10/5/2008 at 19:41
A pottery artist knows there are several steps to create incredible wares with clay. Often an artist puts the clay through a variety of processes to make the beautiful finished product you purchase from artisans or retailers.

The most basic tool a potter has is their hands and the clay. Over the history of manufacturing pottery, various others tools were created to make the process more precise. During the earliest years of pottery creation, hands and clay were the only tools used. Wares such as bowls and mugs were constructed from slabs, balls and coils of clay painstakingly reshaped by hand. Today potters still use their hands to create original artwork because they have a higher degree of control over the clay.

Potters wheels were developed to shape clay more quickly in uniform shapes. Identical bowls and wares are easier to make on a potter’s wheel. A turntable, referred to as the wheel head, rotates at various speeds. The clay must be thrown and centered on the potter’s wheel, which is a very important skill to master. Once the clay is centered, it is opened, flattened, pulled and trimmed to refine its shape. All of these techniques take time to master. Also, on a potter’s wheel creations must all basically have a radial symmetry on a vertical base.

Potters can decorate clay prior to the throwing process. By adding certain elements such as sand, the final creation will have a unique texture and design. Colored clays may be used or colorants added to ...

ASSESSING THE VALUE OF YOUR COLLECTION  by

 Veronica Scott
1/15/2008 at 09:58
Many people who collect valuables hope that one day their collections will be worth something. Others might build an impressive collection for sheer joy of having that collection, but there is still a small part in each person that secretly wants to know what their collection is worth. While not every collection will yield a fortune, it’s still good to know for insurance purposes.

Assessing collections is an art. Many people have taken their hobby to the next level and have become experts on specific items. For the most accurate results, finding one such specialist will help immensely, but there are steps you can take to do some of the initial footwork on your own.

Price Guides

The best place to start to find the value of a single piece in your collection, or the entire collection itself, is price guides. Price guides are generally books with listings for a wide selection of collectibles in different stages of upkeep – fair, mint, poor, etc. Some guides will have several types of collectibles listed in a single source, but you can also narrow down your search with more specific information for a exact item or type of collection.

Find Local Antique Shops or Trade Shows

Chances are, you’re not the only one collecting the items you have. The best places to compare the value of your collection to others are at trade shows or antique shops. Keep in mind the market value can fluctuate from the number you may have found on your own. The market ...

BECOME A VIDEO GAME TESTER IN 5 SIMPLE STEPS  by

 Sean Saunders
1/15/2008 at 09:58
Step One: Be Proactive!

You won’t land any video game tester jobs if you just sit around and wait for a "Game Testers Wanted" ad to appear in the paper. It won’t happen. So instead of sitting back and waiting for a miracle to occur, just get out there and find the perfect video game testing job for you.

Head straight to the game companies and developers and apply for testing jobs. Since they aren’t looking for you, the only logical step is to actively search for them. Once you find them (which shouldn’t take too long), apply for a game tester position with them and then repeat the process for as many different companies as humanly possible.

On your application/resume, brag about all of your video game achievements, such as the consoles you own, the games you’ve played, the games you own, the MMORPGs you are apart of, and anything else that shows how much experience you have with video games. And if you want to help your cause even further, create a website/blog that talks about video games, gives reviews, previews, cheats, hints, tips, etc.

You have to remember that experience and professionalism count for a lot in this industry. Therefore, the more experience you have and the more professional you are, the better your chances are for getting a video game tester job.

Step Two: Step Out of Fairy Tale Land and Into Reality

You have to realize that video game testing is a job. Yes, it’s a really fun job, but it ...

THE BEST WAY TO DOWNLOAD TV SHOWS  by

 Kashin Torwalds
1/15/2008 at 09:57
There’s a lot of talk these days about how and why consumers download TV shows and the legalities that surround this practice. The legal lines seem to be muddled and murky at best and downright invisible at worst. Some consumers who download TV shows simply don’t care one way or the other, and for the most part, the vast majority of computer users who download TV shows are never exposed for their practice; legal or otherwise.

If you happen to be one of those consumers that do have a conscience, there are completely legal ways to download TV shows to your PC. And you’ll never have to worry about legalities or denying some production company its due income under copyright laws. The best way to download TV shows is by subscribing to a website with access to past and present episodes of your favorite TV shows.

TV download websites might be compared to a video store membership in a limited manner of speaking. Almost everyone carries at least one video store membership in his or her wallet. That membership card allows you to walk into a video store, borrow a movie and take it home to watch it for a small fee. That video store has paid the appropriate fees itself to the companies which produce and distribute the videos that the video store rents out, thus ensuring that the people who played a part in making the movie in the first place are receiving the income to which they are entitled.

TELEVISION DOWNLOADS: A TECHIE’S DREAM  by

 Kashin Torwalds
1/15/2008 at 09:57
I just sprinted in from the local electronics superstore. I’ve got my receipt to prove my purchase. I’ve got the box out of the bag. I’m opening the package of my shiny new 128-bit, one gigabyte double-data rate two synchronous dynamic random access memory graphics card. In layman’s terms, it’s a pretty cool little device. I’m going to install it in my computer, hook the S Video TV-Out to my television and download tv shows like there’s no tomorrow.

Why download television shows? Why not look at the schedule and just record my favorites like any other guy? Because I am a man of the future. Because I believe the future lies in a more integrated use of technology to enhance my life. Because I like a lot of tv! Television downloads let me see all my favorite shows.

The choice to download TV Shows is fast becoming the preferred delivery method of choice for televised media. Tv series downloads are easy to obtain. Classic series are available with a few mouse clicks, as are many newer favorites. The luxury of obtaining quality entertainment without venturing to the local superstore is understandably something that appeals to many people about a tv download, since the modern workday has become such a blur of pressing deadlines and multitasking. Television downloads are a very affordable way to enjoy fantastic programming whenever you desire. There are a wide variety of tv show downloads to choose from today. Tv show downloads are the wave of the future.

SCRAPBOOKERS BEWARE  by

 Joe Zicherman
1/15/2008 at 09:56
To discover how effective the PaperSaver formula is on acid paper, we did a series of experiments using methods that the Library of Congress pioneered to protect their archives and standards long used in the paper industry.

This involved taking papers that were first tested for their acidity and then treating some with the PaperSaver formula, leaving some untreated for comparison. Then, their fold strength—a measure of paper performance—was used to see how effective the PaperSaver treatment was. Fold strength is how many times a paper can be bent back and forth without breaking. A variety of papers were used in these tests to evaluate the treatments, including different acid paper samples from two commercial sources and one from a local newspaper. To simulate the effects of aging on the paper, paper samples were exposed in ovens at temperatures that would boil water. Throughout the weeks of testing, individual samples were taken out and tested to see how their fold strength decreased as time went by. Some of this testing showed us that PaperSaver could be effective when applied to only one side of acidcontaining paper sheets. Since that could result in a major savings in time and materials, we also included paper samples treated with PaperSaver – but only on one side - in this study.

MIT Fold Testing Equipment used to test PaperSaver’s effectiveness.

What kinds of paper did we use?

The three paper samples in the study were:

• 25% cotton, 20-lb “fine business paper” produced by Southworth.

• 90 GSM, 24-lb basis, ...

MINIATURE PAINTING - ART THROUGH THE AGES  by

 Rebecca Latham
1/15/2008 at 09:55
As an artist, Rebecca Latham as well as her mother, Karen, and sister, Bonnie, strive for detail in their painting. Studying with a Flemish master, they have developed their styles for painting extreme realism. Their works, both large and small, are painted “in miniature”.

Early Beginnings

Miniature painting is a traditional style of art that is very detailed, often referred to as painting or working “in miniature”. Because of their origins as illuminations, they are also painted to have as smooth of a surface as possible. (It is also suggested that miniature art may have been influenced by the medals of ancient Rome as well) Miniature art can be traced back to ancient Egyptian manuscripts on papyrus scrolls. Monks are also often highlighted for their contributions to early miniature painting with their beautifully illuminated manuscripts such as the Celtic Book of Kells and England’s Lindisfarne Gospels (both of which measure around 9" x 12"). Some early manuscripts contain miniature paintings on their pages that depict beautiful arrangements of life sized flower arrangements on their borders. The history of miniature painting is also seen throughout the world in various other cultures.

Miniature painting began out of necessity for illustrating documents and manuscripts to aid those reading them during a time when many were not able to, before printing was invented. The miniature helped to convey the story and meaning of the written word. Therefore, the art of miniature painting is directly connected to the book arts. The various sized illuminations (pictures) were cut out ...

DEAD TREES GIVE WILD BIRDS A HELPING HAND  by

 Marjie Gemmell
9/22/2007 at 23:14
People who enjoy nature and wildlife, and especially those who have an interest in and take pleasure from watching and identifying birds, would not knowingly act in a manner harmful to them. Yet, everyday we unintentionally do exactly that, because we don’t stop to consider the consequences of our actions.

Take for instance DEAD TREES. Our first instinct is to cut the unsightly things down…but stop! If the tree does not present a hazard to you or your neighbors, think about leaving part of it for the birds. A snag, stump or even a couple of logs can be beneficial to birds for perching, nesting and foraging for insects.

Wood ducks, woodpeckers and kestrels rely on cavities for nest sites -- three cheers for reproduction of those species! Chickadees, nuthatches and titmice find the softer wood of an old snag easier to excavate for nesting holes. If you’re concerned about the appearance of a snag or stump plant some grasses and flowers at the base in order to dress it up.

Think about it…there are more ways to attract birds to your backyard than hanging bird feeders. The addition of a snag or stump can bring many new delightful species of birds for you to enjoy.

Now, let’s think about some other species of birds that are in trouble today because of habitat loss. Drive almost anywhere in the country and you’ll see miles and miles of intensely cultivated crops. Small family farms have all but disappeared and not a fence row in sight. ...
