Improve Golf Hip Turn For Longer Drives

by  Mike Pedersen 4/7/2012

In golf, hip turn is critical to maximizing power and distance. All the pros arrive at impact with their hips more open than they were at address. The only way to achieve this position is to have a higher level of flexibility in your hip joints to enable the rotation through the ball to be at a higher speed without tension.

Simple golf stretches can quickly improve that area of your body, and give you the freedom to "free wheel" it through impact, resulting in a better strike on the ball. These flexibility moves should be dynamic or continuous movement for maximum effect. Golf one flowing move from start to finish.

Older golfers struggle with this the most. The hip joint loses its elasticity and nearly becomes locked, which dramatically reduces your ability to generate power through impact. Take away your hips, and you’ve got a very weak, upper body slap at the ball. Many senior golfers have this weak slap, and don’t know what to do about it.

One simple golf stretch is a side lunge. Where you step to the side, then squat down on the leg that’s doing the stepping. When you do, you’ll be stretching the opposite leg hip joint. You would do 10 side lunges for each leg. When you’re done, you’ll feel more blood flow in that area than you’ve felt in years, which is a good thing.

A second dynamic stretch is a front lunge, but when you go down, just hold it ...

Iron Fitting - Iron Out The Details

by  Tom Wishon 4/7/2012

Since all golfers’ full complement of "irons" should include a mix of hybrids and irons, here are a number of other important elements of iron set fitting that can help ensure golfers are custom fit for the best overall iron set.

Iron Lengths and Length Increments
The starting length of the combined hybrid/iron set starts with a measurement of the golfer’s wrist to floor dimension. Final length is then a process of swing evaluation to determine the maximum length each golfer can control while still being able to address and swing at the ball with complete comfort.

Once the starting length is determined, there is no rule that says all the irons have to be made in the usual half-inch increments seen on all irons sold off the shelf. Most golfers who measure for longer length irons can find much better iron consistency and maintain the most consistent swing posture when the iron length increments are altered to 3/8".

Iron Shaft Fitting
Golfers of average to below average strength or golfers with a smoother swing tempo who have always played heavier weight steel iron shafts (110-130g) can find more comfort as well as a few more yards in distance from switching to a much lighter weight graphite iron shaft (60-85g). Measuring the golfer’s swing speed and observing their downswing force and point of wrist cock release allows the golfer to find the best performing shaft flex and bend profile (distribution of stiffness) in the shafts.

Do You Really Need Golf Lessons?

by  Jones Harington 4/7/2012

Many golfers consider taking golf lessons, but they are not sure how to go about this. Some golfers, however, don’t understand that lessons can really help even if they think they don’t need them. All golfers can use lessons, and it is about finding the right type of instruction instead of just any teacher for any type of lesson.

If you really want to get the most out of your golf lessons, then you need to make sure you get the best teacher for you and take the right type of lessons for your game. This starts with tracking specific stats and understanding what they mean. If you do this for five to ten rounds, you will notice your real weaknesses, and then you can take golf lessons to help make your weaknesses better.

You want to track your score, the amount of putts you take per hole, the amount of penalty strokes you take, how many times you get up and down from 40 yards and closer, how many fairways you hit, and how many greens you hit in regulation. This will help you to see exactly where your weakest areas are.

If you have more than 30 putts per 18 holes, then you need to take a putting lesson or two. This is where most golfers can improve and drop the most strokes. Thirty putts per round is a good average to have and you should work towards this average if you want to play better golf. Start ...

Tips On Putting - 5 Steps To Good Putting

by  Tom Thrane 4/7/2012

Putting can at times be a complicated thing to master. Much has been said and written about what is essential to be a good putter but no matter how you look at it, there will always be some fundamentals that you must know. The following five tips to improve your golf game will get you off to a good start. Even if you have been at it for a long, it would serve you well to revisit these 5 tips on proper putting.

1) A good put is not necessarily a holed put!
First of all you need to understand that good putting has nothing to do with whether the ball goes in the hole or not. A good putt is one that is stoked squarely on the aim line you picked out and at the speed you intended. It is goes in the hole then great.... if it doesn’t then the put has still been a good putt. Maybe your preparation wasn’t good enough or maybe your read of the green was off but if you stroked the put according to plan then you should still mentally register the put as a satisfactory put even if it doesn’t sink.

Confidence is a huge part of good putting and it does not build confidence to get down on yourself for every missed put, especially if execution was according to plan.

2) Find your core putt
The best way to access the speed of the greens on the course and on the ...

Different Types of Golf Clubs for Golf Beginners

by  Alex Yew 4/7/2012

In order to play golf properly you will need to learn the different types of golf clubs and their uses. There are two main types of golf clubs including the woods and the irons. Woods are used to tee off, or begin the play of each hole while irons are used after teeing off.

Woods
Woods are golf clubs that are used to tee off or take a shot from the tee. They typically hit the ball the longest distance and have the greatest velocity. The woods were originally made of wood, however, today they are often made of other types of materials. The woods are distinguished by a large, bulbous head with a flat surface where the club hits the ball. There are three main woods that golfers should carry in their golf bags including the 1 wood, 3 wood, and 5 wood. The lower the number of the wood, the further distance the ball will travel. The loft of the ball is generally lower for lower numbered woods.

Irons
Irons are clubs that are used for play on the fairways. The fairway is the area of the course between the tee and the green. Irons come in a wide variety of sizes ranging from a 3 iron up to a 9 iron. The lower the number of the iron, the further distance the ball will travel when hit. The irons are made of metal. The face of the club is designed at a specific angle in order to properly hit ...

A Golfer’s Carry Bag

by  Russ Campbell 3/15/2011

The golf bag is the most important asset of all the equipment used in the sport. When you have a bag, you can put all of your equipment in there, starting from the irons, drivers, balls, towels and refreshments. When you have to buy a golf bag, you may be a little confused because there are quite a number of them with different makes.

One of the bags is called the carry bag. There may be cases where you just walk around the golf course and not use the buggy. You can choose whether to use caddies to carry for you or not.

These bags are not meant to carry a lot of equipment so they make them just to allow a golfer carry few things like clubs and few other things. They are small and easy looking and are usually made from materials like plastic or canvas.

There is a cart bag and this one is specifically used on the golf cart. You move with it on the cart and it shouldn’t be bought and used by a golfer if they plan on walking.

For this kind of bag, it is very big and it’s often bigger than the other bags like the carry bag. You can place in all you want that is the tees, towels, shoes and drinks.

There is a bag known as a staff bag. This bag is usually used by professionals and in most cases you can put all the things you want to. You can even put in ...

Golf Balls For Beginners Must Be Cheap And Replaceable

by  Jeremy Winters 3/15/2011

Golf looks like a pretty easy game when you view it on television or even from the stands of lush green golf courses as a spectator. However, the nuances of golf are very tough to grasp and follow. Once you have a club in hand, you will begin to learn interesting things about this game. A swing which seems so easy to perform is actually an art and even holding a club is a practice in perfection. Golf balls are an integral part of this game and selecting the right one is really important, especially for a novice.

Golf balls can be very expensive but these types are not ideal for the beginners. As a beginner you will not be able to appreciate the quality which makes a golf ball expensive. You will miss out on its torque, rolls, seam movement and so much more. This is why golf balls for beginners should be cheap and replaceable.

X-Out provides a great rack for beginners. These are manufactured by companies with well known names. However, once in a while, there might be an error in manufacturing or some slip-up during the production of these balls. They become part of the X-Out and are made available very cheaply.

Range balls are also a good choice for various amateurs and beginners. They are available at every driving range. A novice is just supposed to hit buckets of such balls and keep learning the tricks of the trade. Range balls definitely allow an amateur to sharpen his ...

Prevent Golf Injuries - Lower Body Stretches

by  Sean O’Kelly 3/15/2011

The importance of the lower body - hips, thighs, and calves - as a source of power in the golf swing has been discussed in detail in most golf lesson manuals. But what good is a finely tuned lower body designed for power if it is not operating at its peak before the golfer hits his first ball, not on the golf course but on the driving range? Those large muscles that help power the swing must be warmed up and in top condition to prevent golf injuries to the lower body.

We will start with probably the most important area, the hips, as it is there that the most movement and tension will be experienced. With most people the hips provide the first action to the ball, and if the hips are "tied up", that is, not loose and flexible, the swing will be rigid and lacking in power. So getting the hips loose and ready is key. To prevent golf injuries to the lower body, here are a couple of exercises to do before hitting your first ball.

First, the hip and lower back stretch:

1. From the lunge position, drop the left knee to the ground.

2. Place your right elbow on the inside of the knee.

3. Twist your torso to the left.

4. Reach your left arm behind you until you feel your lower back stretch.

5. Hold for about 20 to 30 seconds, and then repeat on the other leg.

Here is another great exercise for the hips:

1. From the lunge position, ...

Easy Pre-Swing Fundamentals

by  Bob E. Jones 3/15/2011

There are no guarantees in golf once you start the club back. All you can do is increase your odds of hitting a good shot by doing as many things right as you can. You will increase your odds by paying as much attention to what you do before your swing starts as after.

1. Grip. Inconsistent ball-striking, according to golf legend Cary Middlecoff, can result from minute changes in the grip from one shot to the next. Find a grip that works and memorize it. Check it, look at it, before every swing.

Grip pressure is also a variable that deserves your attention. Apply only so much pressure that the handle doesn’t wiggle around in your hands when you move the club, but no more firmly than that. There should also be no tension in your arms, from the wrist to and including the shoulders.

2. Ball Position. The location of the bottom of your swing arc, which is a characteristic of your swing, should be in front of the golf ball. Thus, divots should start about a half-inch in front of the ball. If you take a few swings without a ball, you can see that the club passes in front of you across the same piece of ground every time. That’s how far away the ball should be. Put the ball where those two measurements intersect and keep it there.

For a shot off a tee, put the ball two ball-widths on front of where you put the ball on the ...

Improving Distance For Golf Games

by  Jackie Olsen 3/15/2011

In golf games, distance is vital. Luckily, there are only two main factors involved when you play golf: ball contact and clubhead speed. However, both have to be right in order to hit the ball a good distance. So, how does each come into play?

The Club Head Speed

Maintaining the correct speed involves three main elements concerning speed:

* how fast your body rotates;

* how fast your arm swings;

* and how fast and soon your hand releases.

All of these are connected: your leg drive controls how quickly your body rotates which in turn plays a part in how quickly your arm will swing. In terms of hand release, this is decided by how relaxed your arm and hand muscles are as well as your overall focus.

There are a number of ways you can hone these areas for golf games in order to have more control:

* Make sure to turn your legs and hips towards your goal in order to start the swing. The movement and strength at which you do this is important.

* The upper part of your body is a transmitter only. Arm strength is not a major factor in how fast the clubhead moves.

* You should only use approximately 80% of your strength. As strange as it may seem, if you use more you might end up hitting the ball less far than you’d hoped.

The Ball Contact

Next, ball contact: in order to give your ball an upward lift you have to hit it at a downward angle when using a ...

Golf - Expert, Beginners: The Basics

by  Alan A Bell 3/15/2011

The game of golf has grown in popularity tremendously over the past four or five decades and it has been responsible for making people like Arnold Palmer, Greg Norman, and of course, Tiger Woods household names.

As well as this, there have been a number of courses round the globe that have become World famous such as the old course at St Andrews in Scotland. In fact, Scotland is the nation who first invented this amazing, versatile game.

Why has golf become so popular? It’s the opportunity to be outside, to get great exercise, and for some people in certain circles, it’s a chance to network with friends or business colleagues. It can be played at a leisurely pace and because of this, virtually anyone regardless of age or physically can take part. It can also give you a good whole body workout. So you see what I mean when I say its versatile. Of course, and perhaps most importantly, it is fun. In fact it is brilliant fun.

However, if you are new to golf, it can be something of a huge step to get involved, even understanding the many rules of the game. So what follows is a very basic lesson in golf for the person who has no clue about the game. Lets call them, beginners.

The game is played on a golf course and each course has eighteen holes in it. You can play a shorter game with fewer than eighteen holes if you prefer though. Each hole has one ...

Storage And Drivable Golf Cart Covers

by  Dennis L Ray 9/10/2010

Now is a good time to get the golf cart cover for the rain storms that are coming. There are golf cart storage covers and drivable covers. The storage cover is a great way to keep your golf cart clean and out of sight during those winter months, you can also keep your clubs on the cart and cover them too, keeping them protected and out of sight as well.

There are some really nice storage covers out there for your golf cart, the two tone color covers is a nice look and there’s the camouflage cover that a lot of people like when you need to store your cart outside it helps it blend in and keeps the cart clean and ready to use next season. Then there is the solid color covers that come in tan, green, black and white a color for everybody. The golf cart storage covers come in 2 and 4 person covers, they have a zipper in the back so if you need to get to clubs you can. They are light weight and easy to install. If you haven’t got your cover for this year you should do it now before you forget and the supply runs low at the end of the season.

The drivable golf cart cover is a life saver on the course, have you ever been playing a round and here comes the rain and yes you got the cart but the only thing that cart does is give you ...

The Mechanics of Putting

by  Martin F Vincent 9/10/2010

Putting - probably the most under practised and mis-informed part of Golf. Tell me why, if putting is about 43% of the game of Golf why you don’t see people at driving ranges or golf clubs practising their putting and if they do it’s just before they tee off. I always ask a new student what they would find most rewarding - A 300yrd drive or a 50 foot putt, if they reply 300yrd drive I know I’m dealing with an ego, results orientated Golfer instead of a mastery orientated Golfer.

The use of the mental game is so important in putting, you need to be calm, aware and tension free (not relaxed), relaxed is a common word used in golf and is probably one of the worst, you are relaxed when all your muscles aren’t doing anything, we don’t want this, not in putting.

There is a lot of putting ’Golf Gurus’ around these days telling you how you should putt, but in my view you should listen to Dave Pelz or a close friend of mine Glenn Billington. Yeah, I hear you say but it’s hardly rocket science, well as a former NASA scientist Dave Pelz has done extensive testing on putting and has realised that with a few simple set up changes the golfer can have a repeatable stroke that is always square to the target, so you see it is rocket science.

Firstly, the most important fundamental is posture and stance. You must be comfortable, with your arms hanging ...

Five Quick and Easy Golf Swing Tips for Beginners

by  Todd Christopher 9/10/2010

A great golf swing is what every golfer wants to acheive, so if you’re just beginning to golf you want to ensure that you develop a good solid golf swing right from the outset. Golf swing tips for beginners can often be confusing, there are so many out there, some of them more confusing than helpful. This article will reveal to you five quick and easy tips which are guaranteed to actually help you get a great swing.

Swing Tip One; The Importance of a Great Stance
Firstly you want to get a good stance, now the width of your stance is really dictated by the club that you’re using, so here’s a quick guideline;

- For your middle irons your feet should be placed about shoulder width apart.
- For your short irons the stance needs to be a little narrower than shoulder width apart.
- For your long irons and woods your stance should be a little wider than shoulder width apart.

Next you need to ensure that you have your weight distributed correctly, your weight distribution also depends on what club you’re using;

- Short Irons; Have slightly more weight on your front foot (your left foot if you’re right handed).
- Middle Irons; Your weight should be evenly balanced between both feet.
- When you’re using longer clubs like your driver you want to have slightly more weight on your back foot (your right foot if you’re right handed).

Swing Tip Two; The Importance of Great Posture
Now that you have the correct stance you want to ...
