There are many ways to bring down your blood glucose levels, but the easiest and most effective way to do this is to improve your health through exercise and fitness. There was a time when individuals use to look forward to working out, but as we move further away from physical lifestyles it is becoming more evident day by day that this is not the case.

Leading an inactive lifestyle can lead to many physical ailments. It is even thought that it is a key reason for the surge of type 2 diabetes in the US (obesity promotes insulin resistance along with other issues).

Exercise should be a common practice. In the United States of America research has shown that ...

Does Running Improve Workplace Performance?

by  Stewart H 3/2/2012

By now, you have most likely seen the studies proclaiming the popularity of running among executives at companies of all sizes. However, is the relationship between running merely a correlation or causation? Are successful individuals in the workplace more inclined to seek high personal fitness levels or is there really something to running that helps people excel in the workplace?

The evidence points to the latter and that running might actually improve brain function and help develop crucial skills needed to be successful in the workplace.

Mike Goldsby, professor of management, at Ball State examined this question when he surveyed over 300 executives at companies across Indiana and neighboring states. The results? The companies headed by CEO runners were more successful in ...

If your focus is on strength training, you will get stronger. If your goal is to improve your overall fitness level, you will need to use a well-rounded program that builds both endurance and strength.

Interval Training - How It Works

by  James Spann 3/2/2012

I actually discovered the benefits of interval training by accident. While riding my stationary bike at 12 mph one morning, I became bored after about 1 hour into my workout. So I decided to vary the speed and intensity. I would pedal as hard as I could for 30 seconds, and then pedal at about 12 mph for 1 minute. I kept doing this for 30 more minutes. After the workout, I was astounded that I had burned a lot more calories than had been burned in previous workouts.

I didn’t know it at the time, but I was using an effective tool for cardiovascular fitness called interval training. I was able to burn more calories without spending a lot of ...

Push-Ups: The Perfect Free At-Home Fitness Exercise

by  Mike F Massey 3/2/2012

Why push-ups? We have beendoing push-ups since we were babies, to get our faces off the floor and see what the big world was about. Building our upper body strength came naturally as we played with toys on the floor, crawled around under tables through imaginary forts and castles, and dug in the dirt outside. Simple play gave us upper body strength. (Just try doing everything a playing toddler does for an hour; it would exhaust an Olympic athlete.) Army drill sergeants have been demanding push-ups from generations of soldiers because they work. Pushing yourself up off the floor is an elemental exercise that primarily works the upper body and secondarily works the abs, hips, and legs, and requires no ...

Endurance Training

by  Daniel Salcumbe 12/21/2011

Endurance training is a loose term used to describe different aspects of aerobic, anaerobic, strength and speed conditioning. Aerobic endurance training will be the main focus of this page. Depending on your goal and sport, there are many different types of aerobic endurance training you can incorporate in to your training programmes. There is long distance, cruise interval training, tempo training, sprint intervals and Fartlek training. Each type of aerobic endurance training has it’s benefits and flaws:

Long distance
Obviously this type of training is ideal for a long distance runner, rower or cyclist. The intensity is usually less than 80% max heart rate and the athlete should be able to maintain a pace at which he/she can hold a conversation. The ...

Why Nutrition Is a Key Factor in Exercise

by  James Don Hardy 12/21/2011

"Why is nutrition important?" These are the same words used by many people who are trying to get fit quick. A lot of people think they know exactly what to do and what not to do when they take a trip to the gym. Not to say that there aren’t some people out there that know what they are doing, but this is only a very small percentage.

A lot of people seem to think that all they need to do is to go to the gym and lift some weights and they will build muscle, they are missing the point - nutrition is key. Other people think that by cutting out foods (which they don’t know are essential) they are ...

Lever Systems in Exercise: Tips for Understanding

by  Kim Fischer 12/21/2011

In an anatomy or kinesiology class or when studying for a personal trainer exam, you will often have to know what the three lever systems, common to the human body, are and illustrate an understanding and application of them. This is often a confusing concept for many students of movement science.

Lever implies bone. System implies a number of different parts or components. In a lever system, the effort (E) comes from the muscle that is causing movement at the fulcrum (F) or joint, and the resistance (R) or load is the weight to be overcome by contraction of the muscle.

The body has three lever systems. They are referred to as first, second, and third class systems.

Each has three components - ...

by  Noel Glass 12/21/2011

You’ll never get a control on hypoglycemia symptoms unless you start some form of exercise.

There is a difference between subscribing to a fitness program and doing self-designed fitness methods. For one, these fitness programs are based on reliable scientific and medical principles. They have been designed by experts from the medical and fitness industry to give real results to those who undergo the said program. Although fitness programs oftentimes require sheer dedication and discipline from those people who subscribe to it, thus making these programs reasonably daunting and taxing, at least at first, the rewards are absolutely worth the efforts and sacrifices.

Here are the three basic components of a well laid-out and effective fitness program.
