IT CERTIFICATION - SITTING ON THE FENCE  by

 E.S. Cromwell
2/9/2008 at 11:54
The Fence

O.K., so you’ve been sitting on a fence for a few years on whether or not you should take what computer skills you already possess and better them so you can start a career in the IT sphere of the working world. One question, why are you sitting atop a fence in the first place? Isn’t your bum a bit, sore? It’s a wise decision to hop off and over that fence to put your feet on stable ground where you can foster IT know-how through training courses that will prop you up in a sturdy position to spur growth.

Yet, this growth I speak of can’t start until you’ve hopped off the fence and are willing to get your hands dirty. Assuming you’re still sitting up there, keeping hesitancy and uncertainty under your rump, the following information will attempt to level with your current stagnant state, but also, and hopefully, entice you down.

Papers Speak Louder Than Words

So, you tell yourself and your prospective employer that you know your stuff, all the ins, outs, ups and downs of a specific technical task. That’s fine and dandy, but, despite you not minding hearing your proclamation, your interviewee does. From a prospective employer’s position, they want validity in the form of paper, in other words, a certification. Without this confirmation, you’re wasting their time and yours.

By confirmation, it’s implying to your interviewee that you are competent in whatever is it you’re applying for. Proficiency is preferred by potential employers in all cases, ...

5 KEYS TO DECIDING ON A CERTIFICATION  by

 John R. Reiling
2/9/2008 at 11:54
Those considering an IT or the PMP certification may benefit from the following points:

1. Some say that the requirements for many certifications have been ’dumbed down’? However, if you look into it, it looks like quite a bit of effort (not to mention money) goes into earning many of the more valuable IT certifications, not to mention the PMP. There is clearly value and knowledge gained, and the key to success is choosing the right one - one that you can apply as soon as possible and will take you toward your goals.

2. An IT certification is relatively short-lived. Generally, you cannot go to school for it, as it will become outdated within a few years, at which time you will need an update, if not a total ’re-planting’ in a different direction. IT certification is meant to be a demonstration of a specific piece of knowledge, often related to a particular implementation of technology. The mobile work force in technology needs a mechanism to adapt and reinvent itself every few years, and certification is a big part of that mechanism.

3. IT certifications provide evidence of a minimum level of knowledge of the subject. It definitely takes work to earn one, and often it is very difficult to do if you do not have some experience in the particular technology. The purpose is to enable vendors to have an ’up-to-speed’ workforce in place with sufficient expertise to implement and support their products. It is in the best interest of both ...

THE LOWDOWN ON MCDBA CERTIFICATION  by

 E.S. Cromwell
2/9/2008 at 11:53
In the IT working world getting ahead means acquiring specific certifications. Without a certification, one is likely to stay stagnant and even lose credibility within one’s job due to lack of credentials. And most likely, without certification stabilization one will be slower to start an actual and straightforward IT career path. From this, it seems clear that certification capabilities allow for IT expansion and overall betterment. This is true, and such expansion occurred a few years back for one particular IT sector, paving way for golden opportunity.

MCDBA Offering:

For database administrators, great opportunity was created in 1998 with the release of Microsoft’s SQL Server 7.0. This brought upon attached certification possibilities for workers related and affiliated to such technologies. From such an opportunity the notion of MCDBA or Microsoft Certified Database Administrator certification was pushed forth.

This was a delight to database management specialists and SQL Server specialists, as their field of work, database administration, finally received official recognition from Microsoft. From this, they knew better and broader roads would be ahead, simply through the offering of MCDBA certification.

Brighter and Broader Horizons:

With capabilities for database administrators to attain MCDBA certification, they knew perks would soon be at hand, as well as unquestionable opportunity. Beyond prospect of gaining actual certification in their field -one they have been crafting and molding for quite some time- they also took into account the soon at hand prominence. This esteemed standing within their workplace as well as tinges of professionalism would soon be tangible and would further ...

FIBER OPTICS TESTING - 5 TIPS ON HOW TO DO THE JOB RIGHT  by

 Bob Ballard
2/9/2008 at 11:53
Tip # 1 - Relax. Fiber optics networks are much easier to test and troubleshoot when compared to UTP copper networks. It usually takes much less time, effort, and manpower to get the job done on fiber. As a matter of fact, we fiber technicians are usually having a cold drink somewhere while the copper testing technicians are just getting started. Also, their equipment is much more expensive than ours and usually requires a very delicate touch during actual operation, not to mention the fact that when testing 10Gig UTP networks, they have to hold their mouth right or the segment will not pass. So relax fiber technicians, the copperheads usually have a tendency to sweat profusely when their 10Gig network fails the Alien Cross talk tests.

Tip # 2 - Beware of Your Customer’s Fiber Optics Testing Requirements. Be prepared to explain to a customer why he/she should not run an OTDR test on 50 meters of installed fiber cable. It is your responsibility as a knowledgeable fiber optics technician to be aware of the limitations of OTDR testing. It is also your responsibility to inform the customer in terms that he/she can understand why an expensive OTDR trace will be a waste of time and money in most cases. Most customers have read in industry periodicals about OTDR traces and feel they deserve one if a fiber network is to be properly tested. Unfortunately most do not understand the limitations of OTDR testing but still insist on having them ...

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY CERTIFICATION INTELLIGENCE  by

 Bill Naugle
2/9/2008 at 11:52
Information technology news and technical information pertaining to certification intelligence for exam training is the main purpose of this article. Many people do not know the difference between computer training and certification exam training. I would like to inform everyone what the differences are. Computer training is classroom education with scheduled courses or online training about the career field pertaining to information technology. Let me explain! You may want to become a Server Administrator. To begin with you will need some education somewhere in order to be knowledgeable about the subject and maybe acquire a 2 or 4-year degree or receive some online training with a qualified instructor. You may just want to take a few courses and receive a certificate in this field. This would be considered computer training.

Information technology certification intelligence on exam training is what you need in order to be fully prepared to pass your certification exam. After computer training you may have a degree or a certificate but you still do not have a certification that is recognized by Microsoft, CIW and CompTia or any other. If you have computer training that qualifies you to be a Server Administrator then you will want to get certified in Microsoft, CIW or CISCO. Certification exam training concentrates on preparing you to pass your certification exam. An IT Certification exam is unlike any other exam that you have had in college or school. There are two very important things to consider when preparing for a certification exam. They ...

5 TECHNIQUES FOR PASSING YOUR EXAMS - FOR THE REAL DESPERATE!  by

 Georgia Stath
2/9/2008 at 11:51
If you are sitting for an exam and find yourself struggling, take a deep breath and relax because when you are relaxed, the study material you have been slaving over all this time will start coming back to you. Of course there are techniques we can use to bring that flow of information back into our minds. There are things to do and things to remember...

1. Remember there is a passing mark.

Understand that you can get some wrong. So don’t put too much strain on yourself. Concentrate on passing the exam. If you pass with a high score, great. If you just pass, then great also. So long as you don’t have to do the whole thing again (go back to study the material, book the exam again, attend the examination room) - just concentrate on passing - nothing else.

2. The test actually gives you some of the answers.

I’ve sat through plenty of certification exams in my time and still do. To date, I’ve never sat an exam that didn’t give me some of the answers to the questions I have been struggling with. Some are so obvious, others are well hidden.

The trick to finding them is leaving the questions you are having difficulty with and just going through the rest of the exam answering what you can. Then come back and do the more difficult ones. You will find that some you can answer now because you saw the answer to them further down the exam.

3. It’s multiple choice ...

HAVE COMPUTER CERTIFICATIONS LOST THEIR VALUE?  by

 Georgia Stath
2/9/2008 at 11:50
Computer certifications haven’t lost their value and they have. These are two opinions and depending who you ask or which forum you visit, you will get both these answers. There are those that think certifications aren’t valuable any more and those that do.

You can only speak from your own experience and here is mine:

Computer certifications have helped me get my foot in the door in finding an IT job when I wanted to change careers. For years I was a secretary and grew quite bored with the role. My first cert, the Comptia A+ landed me that first IT job. It paid very badly, and the hours were longer than they should have been but I wasn’t naïve to think that one cert with no experience was going to get me a high paying job. I just need to get my foot in the door.

As years went by I got more certifications under my belt. My knowledge base grew, my salary grew and my resume looked pretty darn good, what with the letters after my name but most importantly the experience. In fact never did I have the confidence to attend interviews until I started getting certified because I knew I had an edge.

And here is where I will put a side note and state that certifications mean very little without the experience. Certs show you are willing to learn new things, you are a go getter and employers feel much more confident with you because of that. But a ...

MICROSOFT CERTIFICATIONS - HOW DO I PREPARE TO PASS THE TEST?  by

 Steven P. Ross
2/9/2008 at 11:50
There is no denying the value of Microsoft certifications. This is a perfect way to distinguish yourself in an overcrowded field, making you more employable, increasing your chances of getting promotions, and winning big outsourcing contracts. However, before you start celebrating, you can’t get certified until you pass the required exams in the program you’re taking. In this article, I will show you how to best prepare to pass these exams.

First, save yourself the trouble -- don’t take take certification programs that are too hard for you. Before you sign up for any programs, go to the program overview page and read about the program. Here, you’re even allowed to look over the different exams that you will be required to pass to get certification.

Most importantly, there will be a list of the different skills that you will be required to possess in order to pass the exam. If you go through the list and determine that you don’t have any of these skills, then chances are that you won’t be able to pass the exam no matter how hard you study or no matter what resources you use.

So the first step is to choose programs that are within your skill level.

When you have decided on the right programs for Microsoft certifications, then you should use the preparation guide that is offered for each exam in the certification program. These preparation guides will give you all kinds of different tools, from short online classes and tutorials you can take, to ...

MICROSOFT CERTIFICATIONS - WHY ARE THEY IMPORTANT TO COMPUTER PROFESSIONALS?  by

 Steven P. Ross
2/9/2008 at 11:49
There are variety of reasons why Microsoft certifications are important to computer professionals. Computer professional employers need to hire competent employees for IT solutions. And ,those computer professionals who have certifications and are looking for employment are more easily employable.

Besides, the numbers don’t lie -- 75% of managers believe that certifications are important for team performance, and 66% of managers believe that certifications improve the level of service and support offered to IT users and customers.

The fact is that getting certified by Microsoft is no walk in the park. They require rigorous exams to be passed before certification is granted. This means that the person who is certified in that area has demonstrated at one time a remarkable expertise in that type of technology.

This will appeal to computer professionals in all types of businesses. For example, there are certifications as they relate to satisfying customer needs, to reducing the downtime of a network and making the network run more efficiently, as well as certification related to services that will take your company to a higher level.

Those who possess Microsoft certifications have been shown to improve the deployment of projects within an organization. This means that with a Microsoft certified professional you have a better chance of delivering a project on time and also delivering it within your budget.

Also, there is no denying that unplanned support can eat up all of your human and information resources. Independent research has validated the fact that those who are certified in specific Microsoft technologies ...

WHICH WAY AROUND? GET CERTIFIED FIRST, THEN JOB - OR?  by

 Georgia Stath
2/9/2008 at 11:47
How and when to get certified is an ongoing debate in forums. There are those that agree you should first get a job and the certification later, and those that believe that you should first get certified and then better your job getting chances by having that certification.

I believe it’s a matter of ’which certifications are we talking about?’

I will agree with the second lot that before going for an entry level job you should first have your certification. Because you don’t have the experience, what are you showing the employer? how will you have that edge in the interview?

Entry certifications give you a foundation to work on - an employer will most probably not let you work on something if you didn’t know anything about it. It stands to reason doesn’t it?

And I will agree with the first lot about first getting a job and then getting certified if we are talking about the higher level certs.

It’s all about logic.

Being an MCSE or CCNP for example and going for a desk job doesn’t work to your advantage. Here is why:

First you are overqualified for an entry job because you have a higher level certification and under qualified for a higher paying job because you don’t have the experience. So in this case getting your MCSE or CCNP with no prior experience will not help your job prospects - in fact, they can be quite damaging to you.

If you are a newbie, start where all of us start. At the ...

TOP TECH CERTIFICATIONS WITH THE GREATEST ROI  by

 Mark Young
2/9/2008 at 11:47
For individuals looking to receive tech certification, there are many available options. There are vendor-sponsored certifications that hold a lot of weight, from companies such as Microsoft or Cisco. There are also equally powerful certifications that are not-affiliated with any particular sponsor.

One will quickly find that tech certification is not cheap. In fact, in some cases, it is extremely expensive. This means that going after and receiving the certifications, with the greatest Return on Investment (ROI) is vitally important. In this article, we list the tech certifications that will pay off biggest in the job market.

1. MCSE: The Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) certification is still a premiere certification. The test is quite a bit harder then it once was. It is primarily performance based and the questions are much more difficult. You must past seven tests to receive your MCSE.

2: MCA: Microsoft Certified Architect (MCA) is the top certification that Microsoft gives. To successfully attain your MCA you need to have three years or more of an advanced level of IT architecture experience. You will have to pass a review board given by a review board.. This is a very prestigious certification. In fact, there are less than 100 Microsoft Certified Architects (MCA’s) in the world.

3. CCIE: The Cisco Internetwork Expert (CCEI) is a very expensive certification that is very hard to obtain. It is sponsored by Cisco. The test has two parts. You will need to successfully pass the written portion of the exam, before you are allowed ...

 Bill Naugle
2/9/2008 at 11:44
Certified Internet Web Professional is the ideal preference for aspiring and advanced Web professionals to prove their knowledge of Web-related skills such as XHTML design, project management, Web design and more. A CIW certification can give you an advantage when looking for that next promotion or job by proving that you have the skills necessary to get the job done.

Basic CIW training and certification typically includes a complete background in: Web browsers, FTP and e-mail, Web security, Web page authoring using HTML, and Basic infrastructure networking. More advanced training includes: Design, management, and maintenance, Authoring and scripting languages, Browsers, email, and protocols, Cascading Style Sheets, FrontPage 2000 and Macromedia software, Security, firewalls, encryption, and cookies.

The subjects you need to understand in order to pass the Certified Internet Webmaster (CIW) Security Professional Exam (1D0-470), which is accredited by the Association of Internet Professionals (AIP) and the International Webmasters Association (IWA). The authors cover general security principles (everything from user-rights management to physical safety of equipment), and the specifics of attacks and defenses on several popular operating systems.

CIW Security Professional Certification follows Training’s curriculum and objectives for the CIW Security exam, while providing information to help security professionals on the job. It details areas such as encryption technologies, types of incidents and attacks, system and network security, TCP/IP, managing the network boundary, implementing firewalls, intrusion detection and prevention. It also covers securing the operating system, securing user accounts and file resources, assessing risk, auditing, scanning and discovery, defeating network penetration, creating security ...

COMPUTER CERTIFICATION TRAINING - IS IT WORTH PAYING THOUSANDS?  by

 Georgia Stath
2/9/2008 at 11:44
Computer certification training comes in many forms. It can be boot camps, self study or even going to a school. So you have many options. By far the most expensive study methods are the boot camps and going to a school or even online courses for that matter. In that case you have to think whether the certification you are going for is worth that expense.

Entry level certifications like A+, Network+, MCDST will help you get an entry level job. Entry level jobs don’t pay well. They are your foot in the IT industry. So ask yourself "Is it worth paying $3000-$5000 to attend a boot camp or computer school for such a certification?" You decide.

Some prefer the structured learning environment and are willing to pay for it. Just bear in mind that to make the amount that you paid in wages would take you a long time. Also getting certified doesn’t finish with just your entry level certifications. You will need to do more as you climb the IT ladder. But that’s for much later as you get experience behind you so don’t worry about that now.

Bear something else in mind if you prefer to go the boot camp route. Boot camps are great but they are for those who do have some experience. Someone with no knowledge will have a hard time squeezing so much information in a week or 10 day boot camp course. The stress levels in boot camps are very high!! Generally boot camps are ...

GAIN MCSE EXPERIENCE  by

 Paul Abbey
10/18/2007 at 17:16
When it comes to choosing the right MCSE training in order to attain your certification you need to first look at what MCSE experience you have. As you will soon discover each Microsoft certification is tied in to the kind of experience and skill sets that a person has. Some of the certificates are designed for those with very little experience whilst others are designed for those who have been working in this particular field for some time.

Generally for those who are just starting out in their career as an MCSE the best thing they can do is start out getting an entry level position in a company’s IT Department. In fact in some cases you may find that they do not require you to have any kind of certificate at all just that you are willing to learn. Plus that you are willing to spend time on various different courses in order for you to gain certification.

However those that do obtain their MCSE certification prior to starting work will often find that the first positions they will get will either as helpdesk support, technical support in a call center or they take up some form of contract work. This type of contract work is generally only temporary for a number of weeks or months and is arranged through an agency.

Normally after around 6 months a person will have started to gain a little more experience in relation to the MCSE certification they have or are attempting to get. Certainly ...
