Essential Tips for Back Pain Prevention

by  Pete Morgan 5/13/2012

For physical laborers like construction workers, maintaining a healthy back is essential in getting paid for one’s occupation. Great care is needed to ensure the longevity of the spinal column and the lower back muscles. However, even people who aren’t physically active are at risk of developing bad back habits that may lead to serious consequences in the future. Professionals, students and even senior citizens are advised to take absolute precaution while engaging in physical activities that may strain the back area. Hence, it is important for people to keep in mind these simple steps in back pain prevention.

While standing straight and upright may be the most repeated request of a mother to her children, people should realize that it is much better to keep one foot slightly ahead of the other while standing up. The knees should also be slightly bent. This easily takes unnecessary pressure off the lower back. Another vital tip in back pain prevention is to have the knees raised slightly higher than the hips while sitting down. This enables the back to fully support the rest of the body while a person is on a chair or a stool.

People should not hesitate to use ladders and stools to acquire objects that are above the shoulders. This prevents the back from being overstretched while reaching upward. Next, it necessary to remember that it is much easier to push an object than to pull it. Moreover, the arms and legs must initiate the push and ...

How Stress Affects Lower Back Pain

by  Lisa A Mason 5/13/2012

Lower back pain is common and most adults have suffered from it at some point in their life. Chronic pain is any type of pain that last for an extended amount of time. The pain that you feel is actually a symptom caused by some type of injury or disease but in some cases, this pain is a symptom created by having too much stress in your life.

Stress Can Create Pain or Make It Worse

Did you know that stress could affect pain in two different ways? It can create the pain you’re feeling or it can make an existing pain caused from an injury or disease worse. Your body and mind work together as one and when the emotional side of your brain becomes too stressed, you could begin feeling pain in your lower back, neck, shoulders or some other part of the body.

This type of pain is very real. The brain uses it as a type of defense mechanism designed to distract you from the stress because the pain is less destructive to your overall health and well-being than the stress is. Simply put, your brain is protecting itself from a lifetime of stress.

If you’re suffering from pain in your lower back or other areas of your body, stress can make this pain worse than it should be. It won’t make the actual condition worse but it can make the pain more intense.

Understanding The Causes of Middle Back Pain

by  Karen M Stevens 5/13/2012

Middle back pain is one of the most common problems that hit a lot of people, particularly the adults. It is easy to assume that it is caused by long hours of sitting due to work or a bad sleeping position. However, the truth is that there is more to back pain than just these simple explanations. If you are feeling pain in the mid-section of your back, then you need to pay attention to it and discover the reason why you are suffering from such.

Do not be quick to dismiss that the pain you are feeling is nothing more than the ordinary. Keep in mind that the middle back is where you will find 12 vertebrae which are also part of the thoracic section of the spine. Yes, there is cartilage between each bone and these enables smooth movement. The cartilage also acts as shock absorber. When any of these parts do not function the way it is supposed to, that is when you feel the pain.

What are the different reasons why a person feels pain in their mid-back section?

• Improper Posture-A lot of people tend to slouch while walking, standing or sitting. If your body is not aligned the right way, the pressure on the mid-section of your back increases. Slouching for a long period of time also jeopardizes the condition of the vertebrae and cartilage, resulting to pain.

• Extensive Muscle Use-Whether it is due to sports, labor or workout, overusing your muscles will ...

Understanding Upper Back Pain

by  Karen M Stevens 5/13/2012

Upper back pain is an ailment that you can not just ignore. If you are suffering from this, it would be difficult to do your daily tasks because your movements are hindered. Aside from that, it would be almost impossible to concentrate too because the pain will be a distraction that you can not easily brush off.

The pain that you are feeling may not really be serious. However, if you would like to get rid of this annoying feeling, the first step is discovering the cause. Once you have pin pointed the actual reason why there’s pain in the area, then the right cure follows.

One thing that you have to keep in mind when experiencing upper back pain is that you should not immediately drink pills. These will only dull the pain without really dealing with the root cause of the problem. You may not be feeling the pain but the problem is still unsolved. Even worse, it might actually result to a bigger problem.

Muscular irritation is one of the primary causes. This is also called as myofascial pain. This can be a result of careless lifting of heavy objects or strenuous use of the shoulders and arms. When the arms, hands and shoulders are overworked, the upper back muscles are also strained.

Myofascial pain is also common for sudden impact caused by sports injury, vehicular accident, hitting a hard surface or receiving a heavy blow. For mild pain accompanied by bruising, application of cold compress and ...

Chiropractic Vs Conventional Treatment for Low Back Pain

by  Michael A. Rollins 5/13/2012

Low back pain has always been a common health issue, but it is becoming seemingly much more common and it seems there are more and more "quick fixes" and unproven remedies out there. It seems like it is getting harder and harder for the average American to figure out who to believe when it comes to low back pain remedies. Let’s take a look at the difference between two different methods of treating low back pain: chiropractic therapy and conventional treatments.

Chiropractic Treatment
The practice of chiropractic medicine involves the manipulation of certain joints that have been hindered by injuries to the tissue surrounding them. This tissue can be damaged by trauma like being in a car accident, falling down or a sports injury, while they can also be damaged by overuse and improper support of the back while sitting, sleeping or lifting. When the tissue begins to heal it can sometimes develop scarring which can create knots in the tissue. These formations that develop in the tissue limit the total mobility of the joints.

When the chiropractor manipulates those joints the tissue loosens and the joint can begin to move around. The ability to have a more varied range of motion allows the pressure to come off the healing tissue or surrounding muscles, which results in an elimination or reduction of pain and the ability to be more active.

People see chiropractors for a myriad of reason, most commonly however is back pain caused by overuse, improper support, sitting too ...

Look For Uneven Pelvis As The Root Cause Of Chronic Lower Back Pain

by  Dr. Kevin Smith 5/13/2012

Lower back pain is an incredibly common problem which affects tens of millions of Americans each year. A very high percentage of hospital emergency department as well as primary care physician office visits are because of chronic lower back pain. Lower back pain affects all races, all genders and people of all ages. Sedentary and overweight people are at a higher risk of suffering with this problem.

Despite billions of dollars being spent on the problem, there isn’t any decrease in the incidence or prevalence of this troubling medical epidemic. One plausible reason for this is because we haven’t been utilizing the correct remedy. The most common treatment for chronic back pain is medications, massage therapy & physical therapy. Ask any chronic back pain suffer about the effectiveness of these treatments and you will hear a range of comments from "it helped, but after a while the pain came back". You may also hear "I didn’t get much of any relief at all". Why is this? Why do so many people continue to suffer day in and day out?

One of the primary causes of chronic lower back pain is an uneven, imbalanced pelvis. The pelvis is composed of two large bones (the innominate), and a triangularly shaped bone in the center (the sacrum). There is very little movement that occurs between the innominate bones and the sacrum (the sacroiliac joint, or "the SI joint"). The SI joint has very little motion. An athletic, younger person may have as much ...

Tips For Dealing With Long Term Back Pain

by  Guy Bodger 12/21/2011

Millions of people across the world suffer from short to long term back pain or injury, with some sufferers experiencing constant pain and others suffering temporary pain which can last for a few days or weeks.

Although there are various pain killers and pain soothing medicines that you can take for back pain, there is little in the way of treatment that can successfully cure a bad back. Often, bad backs occur due to a new or existing injury and quite often the only thing that you can do to help the back mend and therefore lose the pain is just relax, because movement can often aggravate the injury further.

There are no operations or medical procedures that can mend a bad back, but there are things that you can do if you are suffering with a bad back to not only help with the pain but to also help the back muscles mend and therefore perform better.

Exercise / Stretches - Even though you should never push yourself too far, there is medical evidence that some kind of exercise and stretches can actually help to heal a bad or damaged back and increase its strength. It is crucial that you do seek medical or professional advice when it comes to exercising because you could end up making your back even worse if you go a little bit more aggressively than you should.

Yoga - Yoga can help to increase flexibility and the strength of your muscles, which ties in to the above point ...

Travel Tips For People With Chronic Back Pain

by  Sean Burton 12/21/2011

Travel can be stressful for anyone, but it is extra stressful for those with chronic back pain. Whether by car, bus, train or plane, prolonged sitting is the hallmark of long-distance travel. For people with back pain, this often means increased pain.

There are steps travelers can take to reduce the negative impacts that travel has on their backs. Consider the following list of tips to bring the merry back into this holiday season.

Find Ways To Move: Inactivity leads to stiff muscles and joints. Motion is needed to get blood pumping through your tissues. Those who drive their own vehicle while traveling have the advantage of being able to take several breaks to stretch and move around. People using trains and buses are more limited, but can take advantage of stops. Plane travelers find themselves at the most disadvantage in this area.

It may feel odd, but it is possible to stretch while on a plane. Be courteous of fellow passengers and flight staff. You can ask staff if you may walk up and down the aisle between snack services, and ask your seat neighbor if he or she minds if you do some light stretching. Seat stretches are non-invasive by nature, so it is unlikely anyone would object. See the link at the bottom of this page for examples of stretches to do on a plane.

Make Use of Seating Aides: No matter what kind of dreadful seat you’re given, you can make use of inexpensive ergonomic seating aides to maximize comfort. ...

Five Common Mistakes Back Pain Sufferers Make

by  Pete A Turner 12/21/2011

As a former back pain sufferer and someone who specializes on healthy aging issues, I constantly run into people who have back problems. So many of these people make the same mistake I made when dealing with their back pain. Here are five mistakes I made and I believe most back pain sufferers make.

Denial: Boy this was me! I have always kept myself in good shape. So how could I possibly have a herniated disc? The truth is anyone can have a herniated disc; some may even have a ruptured disc and not even know it.

Ignoring The Pain: Because I was in denial I thought the pain was simply another sore muscle or pulled muscle caused by over doing it. So I took a couple of aspirins and rubbed in some heat rub. The problem is that in ignoring the pain or acknowledging that it could be something worse than a simple muscle sprain, I only made the situation worse.

Not Treating The Real Cause: Once I realized that the pain was caused by something more than a pulled muscle I started treating the symptoms not the cause. This seemed to make sense at the time after all I was seeing a specialist and doing rehab. In my ignorance back surgery made sense. Unfortunately after a "successful" surgery the pain was still there. Why? Because the surgery although it fix my herniated disc still did not treat the underlining ...

When Back Pain Is The Sign Of A Kidney Problem

by  Sean Burton 12/21/2011

Any type of pain in the body is the sign of a problem. Back pain is a symptom of many different medical problems, not always isolated to the back itself. There are a number of organs nestled in the torso that can, when suffering dysfunction, result in back pain. The kidney is one such organ.

It is important to distinguish between back pain caused by a back problem and back pain caused by a kidney problem. Kidney conditions can be serious and warrant immediate medical attention. Fortunately, common types of kidney problems have other symptoms that can help you identify them.

The kidneys are located between the mid and lower back very close to the muscles of the back. They are each about the size of a fist. The top portion of the kidneys are protected by the ribcage, but not the bottom portion. The right kidney is lower than the left one, given its proximity to the liver. When pain is felt to the side of the spine between the mid and lower back, kidney problems must be ruled out.

Kidney Infection
Infection of the kidney causes inflammation; this is the body’s attempt to isolate the threat and facilitate healing. Inflamed kidney tissue causes a significant amount of pain in the surrounding area, most notably in the back between the hip and ribcage (the flank) on the side of the infection. The pain associated with kidney infection is sharp and aching.

The best way to distinguish between regular back pain and kidney infection is ...

The Benefits Of Chiropractic Healing

by  Greg Pierce 9/30/2010

What is Chiropractic? Chiropractic is a branch in health care that emphasizes on our body’s innate ability to heal itself without the aid of drugs and clinical operations. The main purpose of this practice is the restoration and optimization of human health.

How does it work? You see the nervous system is like the control panel. It is the master controller of all our cellular functions, tissues and organs. And as you know the spinal column protects and encases the nervous system. This close-contact relationship can cause irritation to some areas in the nervous system thus compromising its functions. As a result, the body’s natural healing power is greatly affected causing numerous spinal abnormalities and other health related problems to develop.

Chiropractors use a variety of techniques and skills to diagnose, treat, and restore overall health. They use specific corrective techniques to the affected areas and also employ nutritional and dietary, massage therapies and complete lifestyle modification.

In treating patients, chiropractors provide holistic approach unlike the common medical approach that focuses more on treating the symptoms rather than correcting the causes. Chiropractors believe that regular care will provide long term benefits including:

• reduced degeneration

• decreased inflammation of the tissue

• improved balance and coordination

• well being

• makes you more relaxed

• better performance and energy

• restores nerve supply

• better immune system function

• makes you feel great

• better sleep

• noticeable efficiency in bodily functions

• neutralizes the effects of gravity

• increases blood circulation

• better flow of oxygen and nutrients in the body

• improves flexibility

• decreases muscle spasm

10 Effective Yoga Back Pain Exercises

by  Simon G Edwards 9/30/2010

Despite all the warnings and advice about the risks of back pain and injury, most of us do not exercise enough or take care to protect ourselves against further back injury. The good news is that there are some wonderful back pain exercises that not only help to relieve pain, but are also excellent in strengthening the back to prevent against further injury. Below are 10 effective yoga back pain exercises, if you take the time to learn, will be able to ensure that your back remains strong and healthy indefinitely:

"Triangle pose." This is a yoga pose that can help the chronic sufferer by concentrating on the hips which has a strong influence on the spine. It also tones the leg muscles, spinal nerves and abdominal organs.

"Mountain pose or Tadasana." The Mountain pose is probably one of the most important poses in yoga as it is the starting and finishing point of all standing poses. It is especially helpful in establishing the ideal spinal alignment and helps in the overall improvement of the body.

"Pelvic tilt." The pelvic tilt is one of the basic movements in yoga. It is excellent in working the abdominal muscles and helps to correct the lower back posture. It is also a great way to stretch tight muscles around the hip including the hamstrings and quadriceps.

Is There a Fitness Machine to Help With My Lower Back Pain?

by  Rosie Wallace 9/30/2010

Absolutely! There are many fitness machines out there claiming to help with lower back pain. The key question is which ones really work? As a sufferer of lower back pain for many years I have tried many possible quick cures. The honest reality is that there is no quick cure - the answer is a minor life style change and a commitment to strengthening your core muscles and relieving pressure on your lower back. So you’ve heard people talking about core muscles before, what exactly are they going on about and why will strengthening them help with your lower back pain. The other essential aspect of relieving back pain is to ease the pressure and tension that has built up in the lower back area.

The main cause of pressure on all our joints is gravity compounded by our own body weight. So how do you defeat gravity? Simple, hang upside down and let gravity work for you. Not many of us are very good at maintaining a handstand or headstand and those would just put pressure on arm and neck muscles anyhow. So the solution would be to hang from a bar like a bat by your feet? Correct, well almost...this is where the fitness machine you read this far to find out about comes in - the ’hangup’, in particular the Teeter F7000 or the new improved Teeter EP-550 Inversion Therapy table.

Inversion therapy may help to: reduce back pain, relieve stress, stimulate circulation and lymph flow, improve posture, reduce ...

7 Ways to Prevent Back Pain

by  Vince Armstrong 9/6/2010

Back pain is one of the most common reasons for missed work and costs Americans billions of dollars a year in medical bills, lost productivity and disability. Plus, it’s inconvenient and painful.

The list of its causes seems almost endless with stress, car accidents, sports injuries, obesity, pregnancy, scoliosis, arthritis, herniated disks, fracture, infection and lifting a heavy object, just to name a few.

Almost every one experiences a form of spine pain at some point in their lives. However, there are ways to try to prevent it.

To prevent this type of pain do the following:

1. Maintain a healthy diet and weight because obesity leads to back pain.

2. Remain active but don’t do anything too strenuous. Being inactive or on bed rest can cause back problems so stay active, but don’t overdo it or you may tear or strain muscle or ligaments in your back. You may even slip something out of alignment.

3. Stretch before all physical activities including sports, exercise and even gardening or playing with children. Stretching takes just a few minutes and helps prevent tears and strains in all body parts, not just your back.

4. Have good posture when sitting and standing, bad posture can cause back pain.

5. Wear comfortable shoes with a low heel, they offer better back support.

6. Lift with your knees or legs not your back. Relying on your back muscles when lifting a heavy object can cause you to throw out your back.

7. Sleep on a good mattress. Medium firmness is usually the best because ...

Back Supporters

by  James Larkin Smith 9/6/2010

Years ago when when people spoke of getting a back supporter they usually meant big bulky devices with springs or some other kind of equally cumbersome material that looked and felt unnatural. Those days are over. With the advent of modern technology and space flight new super light weight materials with incredible flexibility and strength have been developed so neither you or an observer would ever know that you are wearing a back supporter.

Now you can get an all purpose back supporter, posture corrector, rolled into one. If you are inclined to have a weak spine or poor posture, you can get a posture corrector that covers every necessity. Also if you are overweight and need to reverse the effects of gravity a back supporter may be good for you.

In my case when I was on a diet the back supporter gave me that extra support I needed when I became hungry and tired, as I have a tendency to stoop over when I feel fatigued. The good thing about a back support/corrector device is that while it is supporting your back it is also retraining your body to use different muscles to correct your posture. It doesn’t happen overnight but you will be surprised at how quickly your body will respond to this kind of rehabilitative treatment. Even if you have a tendency to slouch over a posture corrector can quickly reverse this tendency and can also save you from asking for a shoulder massage. Also related areas ...

Diagnosing Back Pain

by  Vince Armstrong 9/6/2010

30 million Americans experience back pain on a regular basis and with so many causes how can you be sure if it’s serious or not?

If you experience back pain frequently or aren’t sure why your back hurts there are a few things you can do. The first step to diagnosing you back pain is to determine if its acute or chronic.

The best way to describe chronic spine pain is a deep, sharp, burning pain that lasts months or years. Chronic back pain is more serious and is often the result of osteoarthritis, herniated disks, fractures, or spondylolisthesis. Spondylolisthesis is slippage or displacement of a vertebra. People that suffer from chronic pain usually need therapy, surgery, medication, or some have to live with the pain.

Acute spine pain is a piercing, dull pain that lasts days or weeks. It may last up to a couple months. It is caused by muscle or ligament tears, strained joints, injuries, stress, obesity and even pregnancy.

If you need help diagnosing your pain or need help relieving the pain, visit your physician. Spine pain is the second most common reason for doctor visits. Upper-respiratory infections are the number one reason.

For acute pain your doctor will probably suggest an over-the-counter pain relief drug, heating pad, exercise, massage, or chiropractor visit.

If you have chronic pain, your doctor may give you a prescription, recommend you to a back specialist and either your doctor or a specialist will run tests.

Doctors can use different tests and procedures to diagnose back problems including, ...
